Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Chris Whitney gave the Washington Wizards a nine-point lead with 3:05 left, then helped them hold onto it with five straight free throws in the final minute of a 107-100 victory over the slumping Milwaukee Bucks.

Whitney finished with 10 points, including eight of the Wizards' final 13. He helped Washington win for just the second time in its last eight overall and for the second time in six home games.

"We stuck with them and we played hard from a defensive standpoint, rebounded very well and executed very well on offense and made shots," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said.

Juwan Howard led the Wizards with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Richard Hamilton scored 18 points, including three in the final 16 seconds. Rod Strickland added 15 points but did not play in the fourth quarter as Whitney took over.

Cherokee Parks grabbed 13 rebounds for Washington.

"The past two games I really couldn't play hard enough for a rebound," he said. "Tonight they kept falling right to me."

Ray Allen led the Bucks with 37 points. Sam Cassell added 22, nine rebounds and five assists before fouling out in the final minute.

The Bucks, still winless away from home, began their three-game road trip without forward Glenn Robinson, who stayed at home with the flu and missed his second straight game.

Milwaukee is 0-5 on the road this year after ending last season with a three-game winning streak away from home.

"I wouldn't mind losing games on the road if we were winning them at home," Allen said. "We are not winning them at home and we are not winning them on the road -- we have to win somewhere."

Milwaukee led by 12 points in the first half but let Washington cut into the lead in the third quarter. The Wizards tied the score on Gerard King's dunk with 8:31 left, the first of 11 straight points for the Wizards, who opened a 96-87 advantage on Whitney's 3-pointer with 3:05 to play.

Allen brought Milwaukee within 99-95 with a fast-break layup with 59 seconds left. But Whitney hit five straight free throws and Hamilton hit 3-of-4 down the stretch.

The Bucks have lost four straight and seven of their last nine.

"When you are on a losing streak, there's always something," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "There's a lot of holes."
