Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Shareef Abdur-Rahim came to FleetCenter and made himself at home, leaving the Boston Celtics decidedly put out.

Abdur-Rahim scored eight of the Vancouver Grizzlies' last 10 points as they held Boston without a basket over the final 4:55 to pull out a 98-87 victory, snapping their losing streak at seven games.

"I got some good looks at the end of the game when they were trying to foul and it created some easy baskets," the Grizzlies' forward said.

Abdur-Rahim finished with 27 points and 21 rebounds -- one shy of his career high -- and Mike Bibby added 13 points and 12 assists for the Grizzlies.

"I felt like I got a lot of rebounds tonight," Abdur-Rahim said. "Lately, I've been going to the glass. We helped each other on defense today. It was a collective effort."

The Grizzlies outrebounded the Celtics 54-36, including 5-6 on the offensive glass.

Paul Pierce scored 27 points and dished out four assists and Antoine Walker added 18 points for Boston, which slipped to 6-3 at home. The Celtics' only wins this season have come in this building.

"This is pretty frustrating," Pierce said. "I think we did take them too lightly the way we played. It's tough to always come back in the fourth quarter when you don't play the first three quarters. We were out of sync, we didn't get back on defense and we didn't rebound. Too much individual play."

The Celtics led by as much as 27-16 in the first quarter, but the Grizzlies turned things around when they opened the second period with a 15-4 run, tying the score at 31-31 on Bibby's basket with 8:20 left in the half.

The Grizzlies seemed to break open the game when they went on a 22-6 burst beginning late in the third quarter, opening an 82-67 lead on a layup by Isaac Austin with 11:30 to play.

Boston scored a season-low 12 points in the third quarter and looked to be finished.

But the Celtics roared back, running off 13 straight points during one stretch of the fourth quarter to come within 86-84 when Pierce picked off an inbounds pass and went in for a layup with 4:55 to go.

Grant Long, who finished with 14 points, answered with a jumper from the top of the key with 3:19 remaining and Boston's last points came on a pair of free throws by Pierce with 2:30 left.

"We really needed Grant to play like that," Abdur-Rahim said. "He hit some big shots. A good player comes out and plays well every night."

The Grizzlies scored the final eight points, six from Abdur-Rahim, to win for the first time since November 8, when they were 4-1.

"This is a huge game for us," Long said. "We turned the ball over a few times and stayed with it. We're going to New York (Monday night), we're going to give it the same effort."

The Celtics, who already are without Kenny Anderson, played with point guards Doug Overton and Chris Herren slowed by injury. Anderson has a broken jaw, Overton a sprained ankle and Herren a bruised shoulder.

"We had a little bit of an excuse at the point, but that did not lose us the game tonight," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "We lost the game because of transition defense. Every time we missed a shot, they got something going the other way. They were 16-for-22 on the break after shooting 28 percent in the first quarter. They just took us to the woodshed on the glass."

The Celtics came into the game averaging 101 points per game at home. They are scoring 84 points per contest on the road, where they are 0-4.
