Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- On a night when Shaquille O'Neal was oddly ineffective, Kobe Bryant picked up the slack with 29 points as the Los Angeles Lakers continued the dominance of their crosstown rivals with a 98-83 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Appearing flat, O'Neal contributed 16 points and six rebounds and Rick Fox chipped in 10 points for the Lakers, who have won the last 15 meetings with the Clippers.

"I missed a lot of shots that I'd usually make," said O'Neal, who had just three points in the first half but finished 7-for-15 from the field. "I'm the type of player that has to turn it around. I don't want to have bad games.

"I don't think we played down, they played aggressive. They're always trying to beat us. They've got nothing to lose. We picked it up when we had to."

The Lakers finally are beginning to resemble the team that won the NBA championship last season. After splitting their first six games, they have won seven of eight to move within a half-game of first-place Phoenix in the Pacific Division.

"No matter how many championships you win, you don't want the Clippers beating you," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I don't care what the stakes are. You don't want to give that team confidence. We wanted to come out and make a statement."

Jeff McInnis had 20 points and Lamar Odom collected 16 for the Clippers, who have dropped five in a row. They have not beaten the Lakers since a 97-95 victory on March 14, 1997.

"Hey, they're world champions and we're still trying to find ourselves," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We still played with great effort and we're not going to play a team like that every night. In order for (this to be) a rivalry, it's got to be competitive. And it's not competitive until we beat them."

The Clippers started the second quarter with an 8-0 spurt, capped by rookie Keyon Dooling's driving dunk with 8:11 left that opened a 31-21 advantage.

But the Lakers answered with a 13-1 run. Bryant and rookie Mike Penberthy scored four points apiece and O'Neal made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Lakers a 34-32 lead with 3:28 left.

Rookie Quintin Richardson followed with a jumper and a dunk to put the Clippers back on top, 34-32. But Bryant keyed a quarter-ending 10-2 run with two layups and a four-point play as the Lakers took a six-point edge into halftime.

"We were able to turn up our defensive intensity as the game wore on," Bryant said. "We came out with a lot of energy. They did, too. They were able to hit some pretty tough shots. We sustained our effort and were able to run away from them."

The Lakers scored the first five points of the second half to push the lead to 49-38 and opened a 13-point cushion with 1:07 left in the third quarter on a free throw by 69-56 by Bryant.

"We had an interesting first half where we couldn't make our shots," Jackson said. "But in the second half our shots were falling and we pulled it through."

The Lakers' advantage never dipped below 12 points in the fourth quarter and got as big as 18 as Penberthy nailed a 3-pointer with 4:17 left.

Isaiah Rider had eight points and five rebounds and Penberthy finished with six and seven for the Lakers, who shot 44.6 percent (37-for-83) from the field and held a 51-45 advantage in rebounding.

Eric Piatkowski scored 12 points, Michael Olowokandi contributed 10 and Sean Rooks grabbed eight rebounds for the Clippers, who shot 38.5 percent (35-for-91). They were 0-for-8 from beyond the arc, while the Lakers made on 6-of-17 3-pointers.
