Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers went through a major overhaul during the offseason but it hardly made a difference to the world champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Kobe Bryant scored 37 points and Shaquille O'Neal added 27 and 14 rebounds as the Lakers broke open the contest in the third quarter and coasted to an impressive 124-107 victory over the Pacers in a rematch of last season's NBA FZ+±Ķ¹

This season's Indiana team is much different than the edition that fell to the Lakers in six games in the Finals. Mark Jackson bolted via free agency, Dale Davis was traded and Rik Smits retired over the summer.

But just like in the Finals, the Pacers were unable to deal with O'Neal, who added six blocks and six assists, and Bryant, who made 11-of-24 shots and all 12 free throws.

While O'Neal was punishing the Pacers in the paint, the Lakers were making them pay from the outside as well, tying a franchise record with 15 3-pointers on 27 attempts.

"Indiana is such a different ball club (this season)," Bryant said. "Last year, they had so much experience, they knew how to win and how to stay in a ball game. I think it's more of a rivalry for them than it is for us but because they want to come out, attack us and try to send a message, we had to come out with the killer instinct to put them away and show them we are the champions."

"I thought three-point shooting was the difference, they shot (27) 3-pointers and made 15 of them," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "We wanted to come here and give a good showing. We wanted to manipulate the lineup because clearly, we can't match up with Shaq. For a while, we had the tempo in our favor but then the bombs came from the three-point line."

Lakers guard Ron Harper led the long-range barrage, hitting 4-of-6 from behind the arc to finish with a season-high 21 points.

"I did shoot 200 3-pointers before the game," Harper said. "I know teams say I can't shoot the basketball but I just have to go out and show (them) if you leave me alone, that's the price you have to pay."

Los Angeles took control with an 11-0 run that produced an 80-60 cushion with 7:43 left in the third quarter. Indiana never challenged thereafter.

Austin Croshere scored 18 points for Indiana, which placed six players in double figures but lost for the fifth time in six games.

The Lakers registered their highest point total of the season, surpassing the previous high of 119 recorded against Denver on November 14.

"Tonight was our night," O'Neal said. "We got out to a quick start and maintained our lead. Kobe played great and whenever we play the game inside-out, that's the way we should be playing."

Indiana fell to 4-24 all-time in Los Angeles and has lost 11 of the last 13 meetings here.

O'Neal scored 15 points in the first quarter as the Lakers forged a 38-33 lead after 12 minutes.

The Pacers pulled even, 45-45, on a jumper by Jermaine O'Neal with 7:57 to play in the second quarter but Shaquille O'Neal answered with a layup and a free throw and Bryant made two short jumpers to give Los Pė•±•Ķa seven-point cushion just over two minutes later.

Indiana drew within four on a 3-pointer by Reggie Miller but the Lakers ended the period with a 17-9 spurt and took a 69-57 lead at intermission.

Croshere hit one of two from the line and Al Harrington converted a layup, cutting the deficit to 69-60 with 9:53 remaining in the third but Bryant scored four points and Rick Fox drained a 3-pointer during the decisive 11-0 run which put the Lakers on top by 20 at the 7:43 mark.

Los Angeles took a 97-76 advantage into the final period and forged its largest lead, 113-84, on a 3-pointer by Devean George midway through the period.

Ron Harper scored a season-high 21 points for the Lakers, who shot 46 percent (46-of-101) from the field and held a 52-46 rebounding edge.

Jermaine O'Neal collected 17 points and 11 rebounds, Travis Best contributed 16 and Miller and Jalen Rose added 15 apiece for Indiana, which shot 43 percent (37-of-87) and made 26-of-33 free throws.
