Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse scored six of his 31 points in an 11-1 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters as the Detroit Pistons pulled away for a 97-76 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

The third period featured six ties before Detroit finally went ahead for good, 61-59, on Joe Smith's 15-footer with 3:07 to play. But the Pistons did not begin to break open the game until Stackhouse made two free throws with 48 seconds remaining, give Detroit a 68-64 advantage and triggering the decisive run.

Stackhouse, who made 10-of-24 shots and handed out a season-high six assists, sank an eight-footer with 18 seconds left in the third. Dana Barros, who scored 18 points off the bench after being activated from the injured list earlier today, nailed a 31-footer at the third-quarter buzzer.

"I thought we played really hard," Stackhouse said. "They cut our lead down in the third but we weren't worried because we were playing good defense. They were hitting some good shots over it, but we knew that wouldn't continue. Dana was huge, he gives us a dimension that we really need."

Both teams struggled early in the fourth and reserve Jud Buechler hit a layup with 10:22 left to give Detroit a 75-65 lead before Stackhouse's basket capped the run 59 seconds later.

Stackhouse, who entered the game averaging an NBA best 28.5 points per game, notched his seventh 30-point performance.

Barros made 7-of-14 shots, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, and Smith had 11 points and seven boards in 25 minutes.

Buechler made 2-of-3 shots from long range as Detroit's substitutes outscored New Jersey's reserves 48-24. Barros hi 5 3-pointer to cap a 9-0 burst and give the Pistons a 91-70 bulge with 3:19 to go.

"We played the first half pretty good, especially the second quarter," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "Then we played just awful the rest of the game. The body language of our guys in the fourth quarter, it just looked like they quit. That"s the part that's the most disappointing."

Ben Wallace pulled down a career-high 23 rebounds, helping the Pistons to a 50-38 advantage on the boards.

"I knew our guards were going to be running so I wanted to go to the boards," Wallace said. "On offense I wanted to keep their guards from being able to run. Basically I'm guessing where the ball's going to come off and tonight I was guessing right."

Stephon Marbury had 20 points and seven assists for New Jersey, which shot just 36 percent (24-of-67) and suffered its fifth straight loss. The Nets also suffered a 108-94 home loss to the Pistons on November 9 and have not won in Detroit since February 5, 1994.

Rookie Stephen Jackson and Lucious Harris each scored 11 points for New Jersey, which shot just 22 percent (10-of-46) in the second half.

Stackhouse scored 11 points in the first quarter when the Pistons built a 34-24 lead.

New Jersey had a 7-1 spurt in the second to close the deficit to 41-38 when Kendall Gill made a basket with 2:36 left. The Pistons went 0-for-13 from the field during that span. Detroit went 6:56 without a field goal until Stackhouse hit a jumper to increase the lead to 43-38 with 1:54 left in the second.

"They just played better than us tonight and they deserved to win," Gill said. "They beat us handily. Yeah it is very embarrassing, especially since we've been playing well against the top teams in the league and come in here and do this against a team that we should have beaten going away. That's the embarrassing part about it."

Harris made a 17-footer with 65 seconds left and after missing their two shots Detroit took a 43-41 edge into the locker room.

New Jersey's first lead of the game came with 6:50 left in the third when Marbury made a free throw to make it 54-53.
