Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- If the Sacramento Kings have not arrived, they're knocking at the door.

The San Antonio Spurs needed an 8-4 rally, fueled by three points from Tim Duncan and a steal by Derek Anderson, over the final 2:47 to hold off the surging Kings, 82-79.

Duncan finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, Sean Elliott scored 15 points and Anderson finished with 14 for the Spurs, who won their second straight after alternating wins and losses for four games.

"Tim looked more aggressive tonight," Spurs guard Avery Johnson said. "All of our big men were in position trying to make their moves. The bad shooting was not from lack of effort. The shots just weren't falling."

Chris Webber scored 25 points and hauled down 17 rebounds, but he missed a pair of 12-foot jumpers and threw away the ball down the stretch, when the Kings were trying to pull out the victory without starting point guard Jason Williams. The flashy guard sprained his left ankle with 47 seconds left in the third quarter and did not return.

"I think I just went up and tried to challenge a shot or something and I came down and stepped on (Kings forward Scot) Pollard's foot," Williams said. "But it's nothing serious. It will be all right."

The Kings lost for just the second time in their last 10 games. Their only other defeat was a 112-110 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center.

Peja Stojakovic, who scored 16 points, hit a jumper with 3:09 to play that put the Kings up, 75-74, after they trailed by as many as nine points twice in the fourth quarter. CH٥Robinson made a pair of free throws, putting the Spurs back on top, and Stojakovic and Webber both missed jumpers that could have put Sacramento in front.

"I thought Webber was going to make his," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "If he hits that last one it's a different story."

Duncan gave the Spurs a 78-75 lead when he nailed a 17-footer with 47 seconds left. Anderson picked off Webber's bad pass and was fouled before he could race back for a layup. He made both free throws, stretching the lead to five points.

Bobby Jackson answered with a jumper with 27 seconds to go, keeping alive the Kings' hopes and, after Elliott hit just 1-of-2 from the line, Sacramento's 6-1 guard hit a running jumper in the lane, cutting the margin to 81-79 with 12 seconds left.

Duncan was fouled, but like Elliott managed just 1-of-2, and the Kings were still alive with 10.5 seconds to play. But Jon Barry missed a 3-pointer and the rebound bounced out of bounds, giving the ball back to the Spurs with 2.9 seconds left.

"On the last possession we didn't get to run the play we wanted to," Adelman said. "That happens sometimes when you have a lot of different guys on the court."

The Spurs remained unbeaten at home, improving to 8-0. They have have not lost at the Alamodome since a 93-77 defeat to Portland on April 13, and have won six of their last eight games overall.

"We've been playing well at home," Duncan said. "Teams know it's a tough place to play. We have to take that same intensity on the road now."

The game was close all the way, with the Spurs taking the only double-digit lead of the night midway through the third quarter. Their biggest lead was 56-46 on Malik Rose's fastbreak layup.

But the Kings went on a 9-0 run later in the quarter to come within 60-58 on two free throws by Stojakovic with 1:10 left.
