Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- The third time, the Vancouver Grizzlies got it right.

After giving up a three-point lead with 26 seconds left in regulation and a six-point lead with 42 seconds to go in the first overtime, the Grizzlies rallied from a four-point deficit in the second extra session and pulled out a 109-106 win over the Phoenix Suns.

Damon Jones hit a 3-pointer with 44 seconds to go in the second overtime, putting the Grizzlies ahead to stay, 107-106, and Grant Long made two free throws with 9.1 seconds left, securing the victory.

"The shot clock was running down," Jones said. "Doug West got the ball in my hands and I shot the ball with confidence."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored a season-high 33 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Vancouver, which also got 16 and 14 from Othella Harrington. Grant Long tied a season high with 16 points.

Phoenix had won the previous 11 meetings, dating to December 9, 1997.

"We came together a lot tonight," Abdur-Rahim said. "We dug in deep, we showed a whole lot of character, a lot of heart and hopefully we can keep it going in that direction.

"It was a big win," he added. "It was so hardfought, two overtimes. They were making a lot of big plays, making a lot of big shots. We were making a lot of big plays, a lot of big shots."

Jason Kidd scored nine of his season-high 34 points in the first overtime, helping the Suns rally to force double OT. Cliff Robinson added 18 before fouling out with 1:41 left in the first extra period.

"I'm just trying to do whatever the team needs me to do and tonight, the ball was going in for me," said Kidd, who scored seven points in the final 38 seconds of the first overtime, bringing his team back from a 98-92 deficit.

"I keep trying to get his minutes down but it is hard to get him out when he is playing so well," Suns coach Scott Skiles said of Kidd, who played 51 minutes.

Shawn Marion had 14 points, tied a season high with 19 rebounds, and he and Kidd dished out eight assists apiece. It was Marion's ninth straight double-double.

The Grizzlies, who have had theirɽՉ́with the Suns, closed the first half with a 21-8 run to come back from a 42-29 deficit and tie it at 50-50 at halftime.

"In general, we did what we've done too much: get a lead and then relax," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "Hopefully, it will be a wake-up call to the guys."

The Grizzlies kept it close throughout the second half, leading by as much as five points and never trailing by more than two until the overtimes. They gave themselves chances to win in regulation and again in overtime.

"They made the shots when it counted," Kidd said. "When we play against teams we should beat, we seem to relax and struggle. That has become the reputation of the Phoenix Suns. But when we play an elite team, we show up to play."

The Grizzlies' resilience against the Suns was a surprise, considering their record of futility vs. Phoenix. They are just 3-17 against the Suns all-time, including a 2-8 mark at home.

The Grizzlies are still without guard Michael Dickerson, who has been on the injured list since November 20 with a sprained left ankle. Dickerson is second on the team in scoring at 15.7 points per game and averaged a team-high 21.3 points last season against the Suns.
