Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Karl Malone and Tracy McGrady waged their own personal battle throughout the third quarter. But when it came down to crunch time, the youngster was no match for the veteran.

Malone scored 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds and Danny Manning chipped in 11 points off the bench as the Utah Jazz continued their strong road play with an 88-86 triumph over the Orlando Magic.

Malone had 16 points in the second half, including 11 in the third quarter when he and McGrady carried their teams. McGrady had 12 points in the quarter, including eight straight early in the period.

McGrady's 19-footer with 8:08 left put the Magic up, 58-48, but Malone answered with three straight baskets to get Utah within four. Orlando's lead was nine heading into the final quarter when the Jazz's poise became a factor.

Utah managed to tie it at 84-84 with 1:41 left following a free throw by Malone. Orlando's Darrell Armstrong missed a jumper from the top of the key and Malone got the rebound. The Jazz ran a play for the NBA's active scoring leader, and Malone responded, burying a 20-footer with 72 seconds to go.

John Amaechi missed a 20-footer from the right corner 14 seconds later for Orlando and Manning was fouled as he grabbed the rebound. The 12-year veteran made both free throws, but but Amaechi sank two from the line seven seconds later to get Orlando within 88-86.

Utah ran some clock and Bryon Russell ended up with a layup attempt with 10 seconds left. But he missed and McGrady, who missed the previous two games with an infected left hand, came down with the rebound.

With no timeouts left, he pushed the ball up the floor and found rookie Mike Miller on the right wing. Miller gave it up to McGrady near the basket, but he was unable to handle it cleanly. With John Stockton swiping at the ball, McGrady failed to get a shot off and time expired.

"It still hasn't went down yet," McGrady said of his ability to dZVсthe loss. "It's stuck in my throat right now. This was a winnable game for us. I thought we did a great job on both ends of the court. But like I said, it was just one of those games we couldn't finish."

"You have got to be kidding me," Armstrong said. "Tracy got fouled all the way down the floor. You have got to be kidding me. I mean that's disrespect to us. I mean it's disrespectful for a guy to get fouled all the way down, I guess he doesn't have enough All-Star years under his name."

Magic coach Doc Rivers did not hide his disdain and is likely headed for a fine.

"Cowardly is what I say, all three of them," Rivers said of officials Bernie Fryer, Scott Foster and Leroy Richardson. "What I think transpired tonight was that Karl Malone got a technical and from that point on he gets carte blanche. ... I thought that Jerry Sloan and Karl Malone intimidated three guys on the floor and it was none of our guys. You figure out who the three guys were because I don't want to say."

Obviously the Jazz saw it differently.

"I had a better view than the referees and the guys were down low and he was trying to pick it up. We kept knocking it out of his hands," Jazz guard John Starks said.

"We came away with the ball, there was no foul," Russell said. "Doc can stomp his feet all he wants but it wasn't a foul. We got a `W' and that is all that counts."

Ironically, Malone scored 11 of his 21 points in the final six minutes after being slapped with a technical during Tuesday's 98-92 victory at New Jersey.

McGrady finished with 28 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Amaechi had 17 points for the Magic, who have dropped nine of their last 11 games.

Stockton had only four points but dished out eight assists for Utah, which posted a 98-92 triumph in New Jersey on Tuesday. The Jazz are an NBA-best 6-1 on the road this season.

"I have an older group of guys, in fact I have told people a number of times that I have coached guys at fantasy camps younger than these guys," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They have played hard. I did not know how we would come back energy-wise after playing last night."

Malone's 27 points left him 48 shy of moving past Wilt Chamberlain into second place all-time. Malone's next two contests are on the road and he is likely at least four seasons away from approaching Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's all-time record of 38,387.

"Hopefully we won't have to think about that," Stockton said of the record. "He'll play ball and break it. It would be a tremendous honor to also do it in an opposing arena.
