Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Cuttino Mobley scored four of his 22 points in the final 61 seconds of overtime to lift the Houston Rockets to a 109-105 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Mobley, who collected 16 points after halftime, hit a tough reverse layup that put the Rockets on top, 105-100, at the 1:01 mark of the extra session.

Mobley sank a free throw with 21 seconds left that stretched the lead to 108-102 and, after Denver halved the deficit on a 3-pointer by Raef Lafrentz, Mobley made 1-of-2 from the line to give thétheir final margin.

Rockets guard Steve Francis also scored 22 points, including 12 after intermission.

"We were picking and choosing our shots," Mobley said. "Coach (Rudy Tomjanovich) said give us (Mobley and Francis) the ball and make things happen."

"Cuttino was tremendous in the second half, he's an amazing player," added Tomjanovich.

Houston has won three of its last four road games after dropping its first four.

Denver wasted a tremendous performance by Antonio McDyess, who recorded season highs with 40 points and 20 rebounds and blocked four shots. McDyess fell six points and one rebound shy of his career highs, but Denver had a five-game home winning streak stopped.

"It's tough to lose when I played as well as I did," he said. "It's hard to swallow. I think as a team, especially in overtime, we got fatigued and didn't concentrate as we normally would."

"We wasted an unbelievable performance by Antonio McDyess," Nuggets coach Dan Issel added. "He was terrific, but we couldn't find a consistent second scorer. It seems like we can't string two or three good performances together."

The Nuggets had a chance to win in regulation. With the score tied at 98-98 and 3.2 seconds left, Nick Van Exel was stripped by Francis on his way to the basket and never got off a shot.

This was a closely contested affair that featured 10 ties and 19 lead changes.

The Rockets took their largest lead, 69-62, on Mobley's jumper with 4:36 left in the third quarter, but Denver closed with a 14-7 spurt to forge a 76-76 tie entering the final period.

The Nuggets regained the lead, 88-87, on a dunk by James Posey with 6:44 left in the fourth. Van Exel hit consecutive baskets and, after Houston's Kenny Thomas drained a free throw, Voshon Lenard connected on a finger roll that put Denver ahead, 94-88, at the 3:56 mark.

Mobley scored six points over the next 2:24 as Houston shaved the deficit to 96-95. Hakeem Olajuwon nailed a 15-footer with 9.3 seconds remaining that gave the Rockets a one-point lead.

The Nuggets took a 98-97 lead on a slam by McDyess. Francis had a chance to put Houston back on top but made only 1-of-2 from the line with 3.2 seconds left.

"We had a chance to win in regulation," Issel said. "In overtime, your adrenaline should take over and you shouldn't notice whether your legs are tired or not."

Thomas had a season-high 18 points off the bench for Houston, which shot 46 percent (40-of-87) but made just 23-of-42 free throws.

LaFrentz had 16 points and five blocks and Van Exel collected 15 points and seven assists for Denver, which shot ɍ5 (41-of-94) and held a 51-41 rebounding edge.
