Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Ron Mercer and Elton Brand made sure there would be some argument regarding the worst team in the NBA.

Mercer scored a season-high 30 points and Brand added 23 and 13 rebounds as the league-worst Chicago Bulls snapped a nine-game losing streak with their first road win, NLK zٕɁthe lifeless Atlanta Hawks.

Chicago entered tonight 1 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the race to avoid the NBA cellar. But spurred on by Mercer's unconscious shooting (13-of-18) and Brand's relentless work in the paint, the Bulls actually looked better than the Hawks throughout.

"It's great for these guys to get a win," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "It got to a point where there was some doubt in their minds. But we got big play out of Elton and Ron Mercer all night long."

Mercer scored 12 points in the final period as Chicago snapped a 12-game road losing streak dating to an 83-74 victory at Cleveland on April 2.

"I was feeling comfortable getting out in transition and getting easy buckets," Mercer said. "When the game is up-tempo, we're getting it ahead and I'm taking my shots and just going out there not thinking where I need to be at, but just playing."

"Acutally, coach put in a few different sets today at shootaround," Brand added. "We were moving around and getting some easy baskets. It's definitely nice to have a win. It's been a long road since a victory."

Jason Terry scored a season-high 22 points for Atlanta, which suffered a dramatic letdown after blowing out Washington, 102-75, on Tuesday.

"Obviously a disappointing result," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "They made plays, especially Mercer down the stretch. Obviously, they got it going. We had a hard time handling him all night, of course, Brand and Mercer are two outstanding players and they had their way."

Mercer and Brand combined to make 23-of-35 shots while the rest of the Bulls went just 11-of-38 from the floor. The duo combined for 17 points in the first 12 minutes as Chicago ran out to a 26-21 lead after one quarter.

The tandem had 29 of Chicago's 45 first-half points as the Bulls clung to a five-point halftime advantage.

Rookie Khalid El-Amin scored 16 points for Chicago, which held a 42-38 rebounding edge and forced 17 turnovers.

Mercer and El-Amin made back-to-back jumpers to open the second half, giving the Bulls a 49-40 lead. Larry Robinson answered with a pair of 3-pointers for the Hawks, but Brand made a layup and 15-footer to re-establish a seven-point cushion.

Lorenzen Wright scored 15 points and got Atlanta within 56-55 on a basket with 4:02 remaining in the third quarter. The teams exchanged baskets the next several trips but the Bulls clung to their lead and extended it again when rookie Marcus Fizer and Mercer made back-to-back layups for a 65-60 lead entering the fourth quarter.

A follow shot by Atlanta center Dikembe Mutombo early in the final period shaved the deficit down to one, jɍ5 connected from 14 and 16 feet to keep the Bulls in front.

"Once I hit a couple of shots in transition and they started falling and then all of a sudden, I just started feeling more and more confident," Mercer said.

A 16-footer and 17-footer by Mercer made it 75-68 with 7:40 to play. El-Amin made four free throws around Mercer's 21-footer from the right sideline as Chicago opened things up, 87-75, with 34 seconds left.

"This is the NBA," Terry said. "Every team's gonna come in and fight and we just weren't ready for the fight. We just had a bad game. It's a big letdown for us, copming off a big victory, especially at home."
