Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- You would never have known that Jerry Stackhouse did not play tonight for the Detroit Pistons.

Dana Barros scored 16 points off the bench to lead a balanced attack as the Pistons compensated for their missing weapon and defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 103-93.

"I've played 12 years and except for one year I've always been a bench player," said Barros, who was an All-Star in his only season as a starter in Philadelphia. "I'm accustomed to coming in and feeling out the game."

The Pistons have won back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Cavaliers have dropped two in a row but held on to first place in the Central Division.

Detroit received points from the 11 players who stepped on the floor and had five in double digits. That was more than enough to make up for the absence of the flu-stricken Stackhouse, who averages a league-leading 28.7 points per game.

"I think without Stackhouse, they were able to distribute the ball a little more than they had in the past," Cavaliers forward Chris Gatling said. "They were able to throw a monkey wrench (in) when they put Joe (Smith) at the 3 (small forward), so we had to adjust a little bit."

"In a situation like this, with a team missing a guy like Stackhouse, they're gonna be hungry and they're going to fight," Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman said.

Barros shoved Cleveland's Wesley Person, whose technical foul shot tiY Jѱ 81-81, with 9:14 to go. But Detroit followed with a 14-4 run. Barros scored six points during the surge that gave the Pistons a 95-85 lead with less than six minutes to go.

"I felt we needed a little spark so I got a tech on purpose," Barros said. "(I tried) to liven things up a little bit and see what would happen. I told Wesley afterward it was nothing personal."

The 5-9 Barros has scored in double digits since being activated by Detroit three games ago.

The Pistons also got a big boost from rookie guard Mateen Cleaves, who scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting off the bench.

Cleveland shot a season-low 40 percent (36-of-89) from the field after shooting a season-high 59 percent when these teams met on November 21.

In that game, Cleveland guard Trajan Langdon scored a career-high 31 points. Langdon was held scoreless in just seven minutes tonight.

A three-point play by Zydrunas Ilgauskas triggered a 15-3 run that pulled Cleveland within 73-69 with 7:40 remaining in the third quarter. Detroit led 79-75 entering the final period.

Chucky Atkins scored 15 points and Jud Buechler added 13 for the Pistons, who shot 56 percent (44-of-78).

Andre Miller scored 16 points, Matt Harpring added 15 and Clarence Weatherspoon 12 and 12 rebounds for the Cavs, who held a 48-37 edge on the glass.

Jerome Williams scored all 10 of his points in the first half, helping Detroit to a 57-48 lead.

"I give Detroit a lot of credit, those guys came out and fought," Wittman said. "I told them before the game that they're (Pistons) going to come out fighting for their lives."
