Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- In a battle of teams that rely heavily on one player, Tracy McGrady received help from his Orlando teammates, while New Jersey's Stephon Marbury once again was left out to dry.

McGrady scored 11 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter as the Magic handed the Nets their sixth straight loss, 83-80.

McGrady has handled an inordinate share of the scoring due to did much the same tonight.

However, he got some help from Micheal Doleac, who scored 16 points, and Darrell Armstrong and Bo Outlaw, who added 11 and 10, respectively.

The Nets trailed by as many as 10 points in the final period but drew within three on several occasions. New Jersey closed to 82-80 on a free throw by Marbury with 2.9 seconds left but the Nets guard intentionally missed the second free throw and McGrady corraled the rebound.

McGrady made 1-of-2 from the line with 1.3 seconds remaining and the Nets were unable to get off a potential game-tying shot.

"It's really not about the 31, it's about the win," McGrady said. "The guys came out and gave great effort. Michael Doleac did a fantastic job, not only on offense but when we had blow-bys going out on the perimeter, he's there to take the charges."

Tonight's game was like so many others this season for the Nets, who cannot find anyone to pick up some of the scoring slack from Marbury.

Marbury scored 25 points but the Nets shot a season-low 33 percent (27-of-81) from the floor. Rookie Stephen Jackson was the only other Net to reach double figures with 15 points and New Jersey allowed 26 points off 20 turnovers.

The Nets were able to stay close by making 23-of-29 free throws.

"I think right now Stephon is trying to carry our team," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "Tracy McGrady is doing the same thing for (the Magic), trying to put them on his back and carry them through. Tonight, he just had better stats and did a better job then Stephon.

"Defensively and rebounding ... I thought we did a good job," Scott continued. "But shooting 33 percent and losing by three points -- that's the story. We had a lot of good looks and couldn't knock them down. Maybe the guys put a little too much pressure on themselves to try to get it done."

The Nets were fortunate to be trailing just 19-13 after a dismal opening quarter. New Jersey shot just 23 percent (5-of-22) in the period, committed seven turnovers and failed to score for the final 3:41.

New Jersey trailed 39-35 at halftime, hanging around due to some futility by Orlando. The Magic committed seven turnovers in the second quarter.

"I've got to say our defense tonight was about as good as it could get," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "Making guys shoot over-top instead of gambling -- just a terrific job defensively."

Orlando used a 10-2 run to open a 52-42 advantage with 7:40 left in the third quarter but Marbury scored 10 points over the remainder of the period as the Magic took a 64-60 edge into the

The Magic shot 43 percent (33-of-76), hit 16-of-24 free throws and were outrebounded, 51-43.
