Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- All season long, Allen Iverson has kept the focus on the court. His first explosion was no exception.

Iverson scored a season-high 37 points, including 18 in the decisive third quarter, as the Philadelphia 76ers rolled to a 95-74 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, who had their six-game winning streak snapped.

It was the first 30-point game of the season for Iverson, who won the NBA scoring title in the 1998-99 season and finished second last season, averaging 28.4 points per game, when he had 32 30-point games. However, the electric All-Star guard came to training camp this season determined to be more of a team player.

Off the court, he has been on time for practice while serving as co-captain, two things he did not do last season. On the court, he has seen his scoring drop to 22.1 while his assists have climbed to nearly five per game.

The unselfish play has helped the 76ers (13-2), who have the league's best record. But tonight, he reminded the Hornets that he still is capable of taking over games.

"I've been struggling with my shooting," Iverson said. "Finally, tonight I was able to hit some shots. Hopefully, my shot is there, and it will stay there."

"I really did not think he could beat us himself," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "All in all, you knew he was going to bounce back and have a good game. At least I thought he was."

In the third quarter, Iverson made 4-of-6 shots. He attacked from inside and outside, making three 3-pointers and 7-of-8 free throws as he almost singlehandedly turned a tie game into a 70-55 advantage entering the final period

"We knew he wX."Օą" backcourt mate Eric Snow said. "We always knew he wasn't going to shoot 30 percent. We knew he was going to have a breakout game."

Overall, Iverson made 11-of-22 shots and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds. He added four assists and three steals as the Sixers remained one of just two unbeaten home teams, improving to 7-0.

"Coach always tells me if I get four of five rebounds, nine times out of 10 we'll win the game," Iverson said. "So, it was important for me to try and get on the boards a little bit more than I have been."

Iverson got some help from a pair of unlikely sources as Matt Geiger scored 15 points and Tyrone Hill added 13. Geiger was questionable with quadriceps tendinitis and Hill had to attend to personal business during the day but returned in time for the game.

"This time there was just pain. Before it was the inability for the muscle to work," Geiger said. "I can play though pain. It hurt every time I bent it, but I was able to use the muscle."

"(Geiger) settled down and I thought he was terrific," Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said. "The second half he did everything. He ran the floor, he rebounded, and because he ran the floor he was rewarded a couple of times."

Jamal Mashburn had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Hornets, who trounced the Sixers in Charlotte during their winning streak but shot just 32 percent (27-of-84).

On November 22, Charlotte dealt Philadelphia its first loss of the season, cruising to an 88-73 win and holding Iverson to a season-low seven points. But the Hornets had no answers tonight.

"He played tremendous," Charlotte guard Baron Davis said. "He redeemed himself. ... We really didn't do anything to contain him. We kind of let him run wild."

Davis collected 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. He scored five points as Charlotte surged from an eight-point hole at halftime to a 47-47 tie before Iverson took over.

He made a layup, consecutive 3-pointers and a free throw to fuel a 15-0 run that gave the Sixers a 62-47 lead with 2:57 remaining in the third quarter. Geiger had a three-point play and dunk to end the spurt.

Charlotte missed nine consecutive shots until Mashburn made a 3-pointer with 2:30 left. Iverson answered with two free throws and closed the quarter with two more and another 3-pointer.

"He takes over the game when they need him to push them over the hump," Silas said. "That's what he does."

Philadelphia led by 23 points in the final quarter.

Snow had nine assists and Theo Ratliff blocked six shots for the Sixers, who shot 45 percent (33-of-73) and held a 50-42 edge on the glass.j

David Wesley scored 12 points for the Hornets, whose bench was outscored, 37-14.
