Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups burned the team that drafted him for 29 points and Kevin Garnett hit a pair of key jumpers down the stretch as the Minnesota Timberwolves held on for their fifth straightѽover the Boston Celtics, 102-98.

Billups, who spent his rookie campaign in Boston after being selected third overall in the 1997 draft, buried 9-of-14 shots and 9-of-10 free throws in 38 solid minutes. He hit a 21-footer to snap an 80-80 tie with 7:14 to play and knocked down a 3-pointer on Minnesota's ensuing trip.

"We needed this win badly," Billups said. "I'm more mature now than I was in Boston. Skill-wise, I don't think I'm a whole lot different. I wasn't trying to get revenge. I still have a lot of friends on that team. I still stay in touch."

Clinging to a 94-92 lead with less than three minutes left, the Timberwolves turned to their superstar. Garnett, who scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, sank a 20-footer with 2:25 left and came up big again with 40 seconds to go, drilling an 18-footer to beat the shot clock and give the Wolves a 98-94 lead.

"Chauncey came out very aggressive tonight looking for his shots like he always does," Garnett said. "We had a lot of things happen to us personally this summer, but we've come out focused now."

Paul Pierce scored 25 points and Antoine Walker and Tony Battie added 19 apiece for the Celtics, who have lost three of four overall and have not beaten the Wolves since January 2, 1998.

"This was a really good basketball game," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "Well played by both teams. They made some big shots with the shot clock winding down. They're a real good execution team."

Minnesota had lost three of its previous four but has won its last three visits to FleetCenter.

Wally Szcerbiak scored 18 points and Terrell Brandon added 13 and nine assists for the Wolves, who shot 45.5 percent (35-of-77) and forced 16 turnovers.

Battie, who matched a career high in scoring, also grabbed 12 rebounds for the Celtics, who held a 45-35 advantage on the boards.

Eric Williams scored 12 points off the bench for Boston, which led just once, 8-7, after a jumper by Walker in the first quarter.

Szczerbiak answered with two free throws and a layup before Billups connected from 25 feet, giving Minnesota a 14-8 lead midway through the first quarter.

"Chauncey has been playing like that. He's been extra aggressive and has a good flow going," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "I know Chauncey says and feels he had a great stay here and learned a lot from Rick Pitino, but he didn't fit."

Billups added a 21-footer and two free throws during the period, which Garnett closed with a 14-footer, giving Minnesota a 30-24 lead entering the second quarter.

The Celtics closed within two twice in the second quarter but Garnett answY ѡtimes with a slam and a layup. He dunked again with just under five minutes left in the half, giving Minnesota a 44-38 lead.

Garnett and Todd Day made back-to-back 3-pointers moments later and Brandon added two free throws as the Wolves opened their biggest advantage, 52-41, with 1:55 remaining in the first half.

Pierce hit a 3-pointer and a 22-footer to draw Boston within 59-57 with 8:40 left in the third period, but Brandon and Garnett made one free throw apiece before Billups scored six points during a 9-2 run to make it 68-59.

Boston continued to remain within striking distance but Billups' layup with one second left in the third quarter gave the Wolves a 74-69 lead entering the fourth period.

The Celtics finally got even in the fourth quarter when Bryant Stith hit a 3-pointer and Walker knocked down a jumper to make it 80-80. But Billups and Garnett answered the call down the stretch.

Boston shot 47 percent (40-of-85) but was outscored, 28-14, at the line.
