Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat finally finished in impressive fashion.

Eddie Jones scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and Tim Hardaway and Anthony Carter nine and eight, respectively, in the final 12 minutes as the Heat rallied to pull out a 93-90 victory over the slumping Washington Wizards.

Miami had been outscored in each of its previous eight fourth quarters and squandered double-digit leads in each of its last three games before tonight's fourth-quarter explosion.

Looking lifeless on offense and trailing 67-59 entering the final period, the Heat finally found their touch, breaking out with a 17-6 run that Jones capped with a 3-pointer for a 76-73 lead with 7:03 to play.

"It was just a very resilient effort on our part," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We were down going into the fourth quarter, which is a little bit of a different scenario for us over the last three games. But we got the win, made some big shots."

Playing their fourth consecutive nail-biter, the Heat got a questionable call when Carter drove to the basket and drew a foul with 36 seconds to go. The backup point guard made 1-of-2 to put Miami ahead to stay and Bruce Bowen stripped Rod Strickland on Washington's ensuing possession.

Bowen fed Anthony Mason upcourt and the power forward was fouled before calmly sinking two free throws with 12.2 seconds remaining. Richard Hamilton's desperation 3-pointer was blocked by Brian Grant, sending the Wizards to their 10th deVVсin 12 games and giving the Heat a rare come-from-behind win.

Mason and Jones finished with 20 points apiece and Grant added 16 for Miami, which had lost five of six.

"Maybe that's how we need to start doing it, be down in the fourth so we can come back and win," Jones said. "Being up 15 or even 20 in the fourth quarter and losing, that's tough."

Hardaway scored 18 points and Carter added a season-high 12 for the Heat, who shot 45 percent (32-of-71) and committed just nine turnovers.

The game featured a startling 31 lead changes and 13 ties but seemed to turn in Miami's favor right from the outset of the final period.

After Felipe Lopez's free throw gave Washington a 68-59 lead with 11:41 to play, Jones made a layup and a 19-footer to spark Miami's fourth-quarter burst.

"Eddie Jones got upset, thank God, because he was not playing well and he was not involved," Riley said. "I called his number a couple of times and he gave the ball up because he was being trapped. He's got to be proactive in the fourth quarter and make it happen. I thought he did. He elevated his play in the last period."

"Coach looked at me like, `Eddie, are you going to do anything tonight?'" Jones said. "I was (ticked) off because I felt like I wasn't helping the team. And I kept telling coach, `Get me something going to the basket.' I kept telling him that and he said, `No, get yourself going to the basket.'"

Carter hit a 20-footer and added another basket and Jones and Carter scored on consecutive trips to forge a 71-71 tie with eight minutes left. Hamilton and Grant exchanged baskets and Jones gave Miami a 76-73 lead when he connected from 26 feet with 7:03 remaining.

Washington came roaring back after falling behind by six, using two layups from Juwan Howard and one each from Hamilton and Strickland to knot the game at 82-82 with just under three minutes to go.

"We just played them tough until the end," Strickland said. "They scored more points, they just had that wind at the end."

Strickland drilled a 17-footer but Hardaway quickly answered with a 3-pointer. The backcourt adversaries exchanged jumpers again with Hardaway answering Strikland's layup with a 25-footer, thrusting Miami in front 90-88 with 1:11 left.

"We were down in the fourth quarter, that's what it was," Hardaway said. "We were down and we had to come in and play a lot better to get the `W.' A lot of times in the fourth quarter, we'll be up and we let our guards down and let other teams come back and catch us. So this time it was reversed."

Hamilton answered with an 18-footer but Carter and Mason closed the Wizards out from the line whilY¢¡•Miami defense hung tough down the stretch.

Strickland had 22 points and eight assists for the Wizards, who shot 43 percent (32-of-74) and held a 42-34 advantage on the boards. Mitch Richmond scored 15 points before leaving the game with a mild strain to his left knee in the second half and Howard added 14 for Washington, which committed 13 turnovers.

"I thought we played pretty good defense there in the fourth quarter," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said. "We had a much more difficult time stopping them. They hit a lot of big shots, especially Hardaway. and I though Carter hit some big shots there that really hurt us."

Riley used a seven-man rotation, never calling on center Duane Causwell, forward Cedric Ceballos or rookie Eddie House to spell his regulars.

"We held on and I thought it was a resilient effort on our behalf," Riley said. "At the end of the game, we've got five guys on the court and bases on what the defense does, you have got to be a player."
