Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse scored eight of his 24 points in the final six minutes to lift the Detroit Pistons to a 93-87 victory over the Washington Wizards, who have lost four straight games.

Returning from a one-game absence due to the flu, Stackhouse, the NBA's leading scorer at 28.7 points per game, made just 7-of-19 shots. But he took charge down the stretch, sinking five free throws and a clutch 3-pointer.

"We've raised the bar a little bit," Stackhouse said. "We raised the bar for our expectations and what we think we should do, not only to win games but how we should win games. I think that's a good thing.

"Maybe earlier in the season we would have been happy to win this game, but now there's a certain way that we can play and a way we have to play."

Jerome Williams scored five of his seven points in the fourth quarter for the Pistons failed to win consecutive contests through their first 14 games but now have won three in a row. But that did not satisfy coach George Irvine.

"I was not pleased with the way we played," Irvine said. "I am happy we won, obviously. We did not come into the game as focused as we did the other night. We have to learn to be focused every night."

"The flow wasn't there tonight but over the course of the season, there's going to be games like that," Williams said. "They don't look back and see if you won ugly. They just see if you win."

Felipe Lopez scored a season-high 23 points and Gerard King added season highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds for Washington, which scored just 35 points in the second half.

"There were just some key possessions that we didn't take advantage of," Lopez said. "They're playing at home, they're going to be a little more fired up and that's what they did: They took the whole attitude, 'OK, we're going to win this game.' We just needed to step up and try to take the challenge."

The Wizards were without guard Mitch Richmond, who strained his left knee Saturday against Miami.

"It was a good opportunity for me today because we knew that Mitch, what he means to our team and somebody needed to step up in order for us to keep the level of the game that we've been playing," Lopez said.

King's short jumper gave the Wizards a 79-79 tie with 6:36 to go, but Williams gave the Pistons the lead for good 12 seconds later. With 5:28 left, Stackhouse made two free throws for an 83-79 lead.

Stackhouse answered a basket by Lopez with another free throw with 4:31 remaining. He committed a turnover and missed a layup, but Williams bailed him out with an offensive rebound and was fouled. His two foul shots made it 86-81 with 3:24 to play.

Juwan Howard hit a jumper but Stackhouse responded by hitting a 3-pointer from the left wing for an 89-83 lead. The Wizards missed four straight shots before King finally sank a jumper but again, Stackhouse made two free throws for a 91-85 advantage with 1:27 remaining.

Richard Hamilton made a jumper but Williams and Chucky Atkins hit free throws to seal it.

"I think they did a good job of defending us," Wizards coach Leonard Hamilton said. "It forced us to take more perimeter shots than we had intended. The ones we took during a critical part of the game didn't fall."

"I was pleased with our second-half effort and how we defended," Irvine said.

Atkins scored 16 points and former Wizard Ben Wallace grabbed 14 rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 42 percent (32-of-76). Williams pulled down eZ boards.

Howard scored 11 points and Rod Strickland added 11 and nine assists for the Wizards, who shot 41 percent (33-of-81).

"It was a hard-fought battle but we came up short," Howard said. "Despite that Mitch wasn't able to come out and perform with us tonight, guys stepped up like Felipe, Gerard, Michael (Smith) and Chris (Whitney)."

Stackhouse scored 14 points and Lopez 13 in the first half, which ended in a 52-52 tie. Atkins scored 10 in the third quarter as Detroit took a 70-69 lead to the final period.
