Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- A league season high by Antawn Jamison still resulted in a low for the Golden State Warriors.

Jamison scored a career-high 51 points but it was not enough as the Warriors suffered a 118-102 loss to the Seattle SuperSonics, who got a season-high 38 points and 12 rebounds from Gary Payton.

Jamison's outburst was the most points scored by a Warrior in over 16 years. On November 17, 1984, Purvis Short scored 59 points against New Jersey.

"All the hard work and dedication I've been putting in is starting to pay off," said Jamison. "I had a feeling I had it going on early, but I didn't have a feeling it would be a 50-point night. The ball just went through the hoop tonight."

The third-year forward made 23-of-36 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers. He surpassed the 48 points scored by Toronto's Vince Carter against Milwaukee on November 18. Jamison and Carter were college teammates at North Carolina.

Jamison also pulled down 14 rebounds but his explosion was not enough to prevent Golden State from dropping its 10th straight visit to Seattle. The Warriors have not won here since March 6, 1995.

"Offensively it was a great game to watch," said Warrior coach Dave Cowens. "But defensivley, it was tormenting for me."

Jamison's previous high was 37 against Cleveland on January 21, 2000.

"He was in the zone," said Seattle interim coach Nate McMillan. "The guy had a hugh first half and came back in the second half and played well. He made some tough shots, hit some threes and just played out of his mind."

Coming off a poor performance Saturday at Denver, Payton bounced back with his best game of the season. He made 15-of-27 shots and also grabbed seven rebounds as Seattle improved to 3-1 under McMillan.

"I think anytime you hXW all-star who had a bad shooting night," said McMillan. "He wanted to come back and prove himself"

Ruben Patterson scored a season-high 24 points for Seattle, which led by as many as 20 points despite playing its second straight game without Vin Baker, who was sidelined with a bruised right knee.

Seattle's bench outscored Golden State's reserves 35-7.

Golden State cut the deficit 95-86 at the start of the fourth quarter but Seattle started a 14-6 run to push the lead back to 17.

The Warriors gave up 18 points on 12 turnovers and were outrebounded on the defensive boards 32-22.

Patterson scored six points in the run and the dunk with 1:48 to play to give the Sonics a 116-98 advantage, the biggest of the game.

Warriors rookie forward Chris Porter scored a season-high 18 points in his first NBA start. Porter replaced the injured Chris Mills.

Jamison scored 31 points on 14-of-22 shooting in the first half. However, his team allowed the SuperSonics to shoot 60 percent (24-of-40) and score 38 points in the paint and trailed, 67-56.

A jumper by Jamison cut the deficit to 87-79 with 4:06 left in the third quarter.

Payton hit a 3-pointer and two free throws to extend Seattle's lead to 114-98 with 3:23 to play in the game.

Jamison's 51st point was the last basket scored for the Warriors. It came with 1:05 to play during a 6-0 run to close the game for Golden State.

"It was just one of those nights everything was feeling pretty good," Jamison said. "I felt very comfortable, the ball just went into the hoop tonight. The most disappointing thing is that we couldn't find a way to pull it out."
