Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- After the Los Angeles Clippers showed their youthful exuberance, Jamal Mashburn and David Wesley displayed their veteran poise.

Mashburn and Wesley turned back a rally and led the Charlotte Hornets to their sixth straight home victory, a 92-87 triumph over the Clippers.

"We were fortunate to get the win," Wesley said. "We were fortunate to get the run at the end that put us back on top."

"We pride ourselves on working the ball and being aggressive," Hornets guard Baron Davis said. "Tonight, we were aggressive at the end. We have some go-to players who made the plays tonight."

Los Angeles erased a seven-point deficit with a 9-0 run sparked by youngsters Corey Maggette and Keyon Dooling, taking an 81-79 lead on a jumper by Sean Rooks with 3:55 remaining.

After a timeout, Charlotte responded swiftly with an 11-1 burst. A layup by Baron Davis tied it 20 seconds later and Mashburn gave the Hornets the lead for good with a 3-pointer from the left corner with 2:59 to play.

"Mashburn's three was the big shot of the game," Hornets coach Paul Silas said.

"Mash stepped up and hit a big shot from 3-point land late in the game," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said.

Rooks made a free throw, but so did Davis and Elden Campbell. After Eric Piatkowski missed a jumper, Wesley had a layup, steal and two free throws for a 90-82 lead with 1:08 left.

Wesley scored 20 points and Mashburn added 17 for the Hornets, who shot 51 percent (36-of-71) from the field.

"We came up with some key stops and some key baskets down the stretch," Wesley said. "We just won. It may not have been pretty, but we won."

Despite dwindling attendance -- tonight's crowd was just 12,086 -- Charlotte has not lost at home since a 96-89 setback to Detroit on November 17.

Jeff McInnis scored 21 points and Maggette and Dooling added 14 apiece for the Clippers, who have lost six straight meetings with the Hornets and fell to 1-4 on their six-game road trip.

"With experience and time, we will pull out these games," said Dooling, a rookie. "We're never satisfied when we lose and we have to make sure we learn from our losses."

It was a valiant effort from the Clippers, who received no points from their starting frontcourt. Leading scorer Lamar Odom played just six minutes due to food poisoning and Brian Skinner and Michael Olowokandi were held scoreless.

"It was an uphill battle without Lamar out there because he can do it all," McInnis said.

A 3-pointer by Mashburn gave Charlotte a 79-72 lead with 7:51 to play before Los Angeles rallied. Maggette drove for a layup, was fouled and made the free throw and Dooling scored to cut the deficit to two points with 5:01 remaining.

McInnis made two foul shots to tie it and Rooks hit a 20-footer, setting up the stretch run.

"The Clippers keep coming at you," Silas said. "They're a good young ballclub. They hung around and gave themselves a chance to win."

P.J. Brown scored 16 points, Davis added 14 and nine assists and Campbell scored 13 points for the Hornets, who received all but 12 pointss from their starting five.

Rooks and rookie Quentin Richardson scored 13 points apiece and Maggette grabbed nine rebounds for the Clippers, who shot 47 percent (32-of-68) and held a 33-29 edge on the boards.

Richardson and McInnis scored 11 points each in the first half as Los Angeles grabbed a 45-41 lead. Brown scored nine in the third quarter as Charlotte surged to a 66-63 lead entering the final period.
