Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose scored 30 of his career-high 36 points in the second half and overtime as the Indiana Pacers outlasted the Charlotte Hornets, 99-96, to reach .500 for the first time since November 24.

Rose was unstoppable after taking over late in the third quarter, hitting 10 straight shots at one point. He drilled his first three jumpers in the extra period to give the Pacers a 94-86 lead.

Rose finally came up empty with 1:16 left in overtime, his first miss since midway through the third quarter. He finished 14-of-21 from the field with eight rebounds and eight assists.

"You have nights like that," he said. "You just try to ride it out and get it to the guy that's making shots. I've got to give my teammates and my coaches credit for trying to get me the ball and get me open."

"We stepped it up defensively, moved the ball better, got a lot of looks and tried to keep it in Jalen's hands," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas added.

Despite Rose's dominating performance, Thomas still thinks the 6-8 guard is not completely in sync. Rose missed the Pacers' first 11 games following an offseason wrist injury.

"I still don't think he's there," Thomas said. "I thought tonight he was still tentative on a couple of plays. His timing is still off from an offensive standpoint."

The Hornets, however, beg to differ.

"Rose took over the ballgame and carried them in overtime," Charlotte guard Baron Davis said. "We took bad shots and didn't execute the offense very well."

For a while, it appeared Indiana would play its second straight overtime without allowing a point. The Pacers outscored the Vancouver Grizzlies, 10-0, in the extra period in an 86-76 victory on December 1.

P.J. Brown finally got Charlotte on the board in the overtime, hitting a jumper with 1:44 to play. Jamal Mashburn made two foul shots to bring the Hornets within 94-90 before Travis Best answered with a pair from the line with 12 seconds to play.

Mashburn drilled a 3-pointer to make it 96-93 but Reggie Miller converted two foul shots with 6.2 seconds left to give Indiana a five-point lead.

Charlotte would not quit as David Wesley converted another 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left. Rose hit 1-of-2 from the line to account for the final score.

Playing its fourth game in five days, Indiana was 0-for-12 from 3-point range but converted 23 turnovers into 28 points and defeated an opponent with a winning record for the first time this season.

Miller added 18 points and Best 14 for the Pacers, who avenged a 91-88 loss in Charlotte on Wednesday. They were outscored 25-13 in the fourth quarter.

"Anytime you play four games in five nights, it's going to be tough to get up for the last game," Rose said. "We felt like we let one get away in Charlotte. We felt like it was really payback."

Mashburn scored 28 points to fuel a Charlotte comeback as the Hornets erased an 84-76 deficit in the final 8:51 of regulation.

"Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the effort," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "I told them I was proud the way they performed. It's hard to lose a game like that but we need to learn from this game."

Wesley and Elden Campbell added 18 points apiece while Davis contributed 15 and keyed the fourth-quarter rally for the Hornets.

"We almost won but that's not good enough," Mashburn said. "We lost tonight but we'll continue to build. We didn't get many calls and we won't get many in other people's buildings but we can't worry about that. We just have to play basketball and take care of things yourself."

Miller's 3-pointer gave Indiana an 82-75 lead with 5:16 remaining. But Davis reeled off seven points, tying it at 82-82 on a spectacular base-line drive with 3:45 to go.

Mashburn's 10-footer gave Atlanta an 86-84 lead with 1:40 left before Miller answered with a 20-footer 15 seconds later.

Rose was held scoreless in the last three minutes of the fourth quarter and committed two turnovers that Charlotte was not able to convert.

Mashburn missed a 17-footer from the left baseline with 5.9 seconds to play, giving the Pacers a final possession in regulation.

Indiana got the ball to Miller but his off-balance 11-footer from the left wing caromed off the back of the rim at the buzzer.

Best gave Indiana the lead 14 seconds into overtime with two foul shots and also had two key steals early in the extra session.

Following a bad pass by Wesley, Rose converted a layup to give Indiana a 94-86 lead with 2:13 remaining.
