Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- This one was over long before it was over.

Arvydas Sabonis scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half as the Portland Trail Blazers broke out to a 20-point lead and cruised to their easiest victory of the season, 114-83 over the Detroit Pistons.

Damon Stoudamire led the Trail Blazers with 21 points and five assists. Steve Smith scored 19 points and Sabonis, playing his second game since aggravating his surgically repaired knee, added nine rebounds.

"He clogs up the middle. He creates big mismatches in our favor against most of the teams in the league," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said of the 7-3 Lithuanian. "Everything he does for us is important to our success. Even his outlet passes after rebounds get us out into the open court. Right now, we need to get him in shape."

Coming off a tough 107-91 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night, Portland took apart the Pistons despite going without leading scorer Rasheed Wallace, who sat out with a sprained right wrist.

Jerry Stackhouse scored 26 points and Mikki Moore added 16 for the Pistons, who lost for just the second time in six games.

Stackhouse and several other Detroit players were in the stands Friday night to see the Trail Blazers lose to the 76ers. But they weren't prepared for what they saw when they took the floor against the Trail Blazers.

"Portland played great," coach George Irvine said. "The Blazers were head and shoulders better than last night. They knocked us on our heels. Maybe they should keep Wallace out of the lineup."

The Blazers rolled to a 22-4 lead and were never threatened. Smith scored six points and Sabonis, Stoudamire, Shawn Kemp and Scottie Pippen had four apiece in the run.

"We had a lot of guys step up with Rasheed out," Dunleavy said. "I thought Shawn and Scottie set the tone in the first quarter and of course Sabas (Sabonis) is such a big factor. He does so many good things."

Portland led by as much as 47-25 in the second quarter and took their largest lead of the third quarter when Smith hit a 10-footer with 58 seconds left, making it 87-55.

Through three periods, the Pistons shot just 29 percent (16-of-55) from the field and committed 20 turnovers while getting outrebounded 35-19.

"This isn't indicative of our team," Stackhouse said. "It's easy to make shots when you are up 20 and it's hard to make shots when you are down by 20. When we play them again, it should be a different game."

In the fourth quarter, the Blazers cleared their bench but the Pistons never mounted a threat. Portland stretched its lead to as much as 36 points three times in the fourth quarter.

Pippen and Kemp had four steals apiece as the Blazers racked up a season-high 17.

"We challenged ourselves and got after them defensively," Portland guard Bonzi Wells said. "Coach preaches deflections and steals and the defense broke this game open. Everyone knew we had to step up with Rasheed out and that's what we did."

The Blazers scored more points than they have in any other game this season, surpassing the 111 they totaled in a 23-point victory over Houston on November 11.

The 31-point margin of victory also was the Blazers' largest. Their previous best was against the Rockets.

The Pistons suffered through their second-lowest first-half performance, scoring just 35 points. They had 31 in a 94-74 loss to Utah on November 26.
