Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Elton Brand returned but the Chicago Bulls were still no match for the San Antonio Spurs.

Derek Anderson and Sean Elliott set the tone early and the Spurs rolled to a 105-81 rout of the Bulls, who lost for the 18th time in 20 games.

Anderson and Elliott combined for 17 points when San Antonio raced to a 25-9 lead in the first nine minutes. A 3-pointer by Antonio Daniels with 1:34 left in the quarter increased the lead to 30-13.

The Spurs built the lead to 60-36 at halftime and coach Gregg Popovich used his reserves liberally in the second half.

Two free throws by Anderson gave San Antonio its biggest lead at 72-39 with 8:54 left in the third quarter.

Anderson and Elliott sat out the entire fourth quarter and finished with 16 points apiece, shooting a combined 11-of-17 from the field.

"We're an inside-out team," Elliott said. "Our first look will always be down low. But we also have some guys that can shoot the ball when the look down low isn't there. Tonight, we were able to find the guys on the outside."

Star forward Tim Duncan played just 25 minutes and had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Center David Robinson was limited to 19 minutes and finished with nine points and nine boards.

"I was happy with the way we looked early," Robinson said. "We came out and established a good flow."

Six of San Antonio's seven reserves played at least 15 minutes and combined for 43 points.

The Spurs converted a season-high 10 3-pointers in 18 attempts, shot 57 percent from the field and outrebounded the Bulls, 49-32.

"We haven't shot that many (3-pointers), as I'm sure we probably haven't made that many, but they were there tonight," Popovich said.

"They came out and shot the ball well and pounded us on the boards," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said.

Brand returned after missing two games with a hyperextended left knee and led the Bulls with 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting.

"It felt good to be out there again after missing the last few games," Brand said. "They were just hitting all the jump shots tonight. We were worried about the big guys but those guards really stepped up and hit a lot of big shots."

Ron Mercer added 18 points for Chicago.

The Spurs hit 12-of-17 shots in the first quarter while the Bulls were 8-of-21 from the field.

Chicago was not much better in the second quarter, hitting 7-of-20 shots when it was outscored, 28-17.

Anderson had two dunks and a pair of free throws as San Antonio started the second half with a 12-3 run, opening its biggest lead at 72-39.

Chicago got no closer than 21 points the rest of the way.
