Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce hit the game-winning jumper as time expired in overtime to lift the Boston Celtics to a 104-102 victory over the struggling Denver Nuggets.

After Nick Van Exel's jumper tied the game with 6.8 seconds to play, the Celtics pushed the ball upcourt and found Pierce. He managed to get off a 10-footer from the left side despite Denver's smothering defense.

"I sensed that (we) were calling timeout, so we pushed the ball up the court," Pierce said. "I took a step, then faded away to create distance and just got the shot off. It was a great feeling and a huge win we desperately needed."

"I think too many people were celebrating after we hit the shot to tie it at 102," Van Exel said. "They pushed the ball upcourt and made the shot to win the game. We didn't get back and it cost us."

In front of its second-smallest home crowd since Larry Bird played his third game as a Celtic in 1979, Boston scored the first five points of overtime before McDyess hit back-to-back fadeaway jumpers to tie it at 97-97 with 1:28 remaining.

Pierce knocked down a deep 3-pointer in front of Boston's bench with 1:02 to go. Denver's Voshon Lenard answered with a tying 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to knot the score at 100-100.

And Kenny Anderson made a 12-footer to give Boston a 102-100 lead, Van Exel tied it for the last time.

Pierce scored 28 points on 7-of-14 shooting, adding 13-of-16 free throws. Antoine Walker had 26 points and 11 rebounds for Boston. Anderson scored 13 points in his return from a broken jaw.

"Give Pierce credit," McDyess said. "I thought he had three guys draped all over him and he just made an incredible shot over three people. Sometimes, shots like that go in against you."

McDyess had 37 points and 18 rebounds and Lenard scored 21 points for Denver, which fell to 0-4 on its East Coast swing. Center Raef LaFrentz, who averages 11.1 points per game, was scoreless in 28 minutes.

"Maybe I need to score 37 so we could win." McDyess said. "But we made a big mistake by not getting Raef into the offense. He needs to touch the ball every time because good things happen when he touches the ball."

Van Exel hit his first basket with 1:33 to play in the third quarter. He only scored six points on 3-for-13 shooting.

Tracy Murray missed a 3-pointer from the corner with time expiring in regulation that would have given Denver the win.

Bryant Stith hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie it, 91-91, with 43 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. Denver's Raef LaFrentz and Pierce missed jumpers that would have given either team the lead with under 30 seconds to play.

Boston led by six at the end of the first and second quarters. Denver used an early third-quarter surge to pull within 59-58 and a dunk by McDyess gave the Nuggets a 69-68 lead with 3:10 to play in the period.

"We have really been struggling of late, especially here at home," Walker said. "That's why it was so important for us. We really sucked it up in that fourth quarter and got the job done. We cut down on our turnovers and forced some on them. That's what kept us in the ballgame."
