Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant each scored 26 points in just three quarters as the Los Angeles Lakers routed the Detroit Pistons, 112-88.

The Lakers snapped a two-game losing streak as coach Phil Jackson avoided his first three-game skid since January 1995 with the Chicago Bulls. That was the last season Jackson did not coach his team to a championship.

"We needed a game like that tonight, where we could get some moves in the game and execute the way we want to," Jackson said.

Bryant scored 16 points and O'Neal added 12 in the first half as Los Angeles opened a 56-44 lead. In the third quarter, the duo combined for 24 of the Lakers' 29 points. O'Neal collected 14 and Bryant 10 as LA widened its lead to 85-67.

Both superstars took a seat for the fourth quarter and the reserves continued the blowout. O'Neal grabbed 12 rebounds and Bryant handed out nine assists.

"When you've got the diesel, he's the chief." Pistons guard Jerry Stackhouse said. "Take him off the team, and it's just another pretty good team with another scorer."

In a battle between the NBA's top two scorers, Stackhouse won the shootout but Bryant won the game.

"Whenever you get beat two games in a row, you want to come out the next time and put it on them," Bryant said. "The guys did a great job of knocking down shots."

Stackhouse scored 30 points, lifting his average to 28.1 points per game. Bryant's league-leading mark dropped to 29.3. O'Neal won the scoring title last season.

"I'm just trying to win us some games," Stackhouse said. "I did not feel comfortable out there in the fourth quarter. Kobe is a great competitor. Next time he's at my house, maybe the race will be a little closer. Normally when I have big games we win. I tried to do whatever I can to help the team win. Tonight it wasn't enough."

Stackhouse scored five straight points in the second quarter to bring Detroit within 42-38 with 5:53 to go. However, the Lakers countered with a 14-6 run to close out the half and give them a 12-point lead at the break.

Joe Smith scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half for Detroit, which has lost to Western Conference powers Portland and Los Angeles by a combined 55 points on consecutive nights and dropped to 4-8 on the road. The Pistons had won four of six games before the back-to-back losses.

The Pistons were outrebounded 55-39 and only pulled down six offensive boards. Besides Stackhouse, the starters were just 5-of-19 and Smith was the only other Piston to score in double figures.

The Lakers are 17-1 in their last 18 games against Eastern Conference foes.

"I don't think they are the best," Stackhouse continued. "They won the championship and until someone beats them, that's how it is. I don't necessarily think they are the best. It will be interesting to see what happens at the end of the season."
