Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns played most of the game like they were trapped in a snowstorm.

Clifford Robinson scored 24 points as the Suns pulled out an 86-80 victory over the Chicago Bulls in front of diehard fans at the snowbound United Center.

Ron Mercer led all scorers with 26 points for the Bulls, and it was not until the fourth quarter when the Suns warmed up and finally put away the NBA's worst team.

Rodney Rogers hit a baseline jumper for the Suns to start a 10-2 surge that ended with two free throws by Tony Delk with 45.6 seconds remaining. Delk scored all of his 12 points in the final period.

Rogers finished with 17 points for the Suns, whose reserves outscored Chicago's 41-8.

"Tonight, we needed our players to come off the bench and give us a lift." Rogers said. "We didn't take them for granted. Maybe it was because we were lounging around in the snow. If you take this team for granted, they will beat you."

Chris Dudley started at center for Phoenix but only notched nine minutes and four rebounds before being replaced.

"I can't speak for them," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "But we didn't play well. This has been our biggest weakness all year, beating teams we should beat. This was another game we allowed to be in jeopardy because we didn't have the proper focus and effort."

With 4:19 to play, Robinson fouled Elton Brand and was called for a technical, allowing Brand to cap a 13-0 run and cut the Bulls' deficit to 75-73. Robinson fouled out but that was as close as Chicago got.

"We just need to win," Mercer said. "We just need to get better defensively. Tonight, they had four or five guys out there all the time who can shoot. That with too many turnovers is what cost us."

Brand collected 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulls, who have lost six straight and are 1-12 at home.

The Suns scored seven straight points as part of an 11-4 run to open the fourth quarter, grabbing their biggest lead of the game at 75-61.

Tom Gugliotta's follow shot with 1:51 left in the third quarter triggered a 7-0 spurt that put Phoenix ahead for good, 64-57.

Point guard Jason Kidd chipped in 13 points, 12 assists and six rebounds, helping the Suns complete a 3-1 road trip.

"I was surprised at the number of fans there," Brand said. "It just goes to show the support that's here in Chicago. My mother wanted to come tonight and I made her stay home."
