Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Steve Francis did not want to play in Vancouver, but he does not seem to mind playing against the Grizzlies.

Francis, who was taken second overall by the Grizzlies in the the 1999 draft, had 15 points and six assists to lead the Houston Rockets to an 82-75 victory.

Booed throughout, Francis seemed to be answering the fans when he took an outlet pass from Matt Bullard and threw down a one-handed dunk for the final margin with 10.8 seconds left.

"Yeah, there's some sour feelings here in Vancouver, but you know, the crowd motivates me," Francis said. "I usually get 24 or 26 points here. Tonight, the points weren't here, but we got the win. That's all that counts."

The 6-3 Francis, last season's co-Rookie of the Year, was sent to the Rockets as part of a three-team trade involving the Orlando Magic after expressing a desire not to play with the Grizzlies. He is averaging 20.0 points as Houston and Vancouver have split four meetings.

Francis missed Houston's 102-99 win on December 6, 1999 with a sprained ankle.

Cuttino Mobley had 16 points and seven assists off the bench and reserve Matt Bullard scored nine of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, when the Rockets outscored the Grizzlies, 28-23. Kenny Thomas came off the bench and grabbed 12 rebounds as Houston held a 51-38 advantage on the boards.

"Bullard was knocking them down tonight and the boys were bashing in the paint," Mobley said. "The whole team contributed to us pulling out the `W' here tonight."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim netted 26 points and Mike Bibby added 16 and seven assists for Vancouver, which has lost five of its last six games. Abdur-Rahim and Bibby connected on 17-of-31 shots, but the rest of the Grizzlies shot just 26.5 percent (13-of-49).

"We had lots of easy shots tonight. We couldn't knock them down," Bibby said. "Yeah, losing is frustrating. No one likes losing. It's going to take us, this team, to turn this thing around."

Francis scored seven points and Hakeem Olajuwon had six of his 12 in the first half, when the Rockets held a 39-34 advantage.

"We had another great contribution from our bench and we did a great job on the boards," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "If we want to have any chance of fighting for a playoff spot, this is a game we have to win."

Olajuwon, who had 11 rebounds, opened the third period with a 15-footer. Bibby answered with a 15-footer and Abdur-Rahim followed with a seven-footer before completing a three-point play to tie it at 41-41 with 10:22 left.

Abdur-Rahim also contributed at the defensive end, blocking Shandon Anderson's jumper. Tony Massenburg made a free throw and, after another turnover, Othella Harrington made a pair of foul shots to give the Grizzlies a 44-41 lead with 9:24 left.

Mobley put the Rockets ahead for good, 54-52, with 28 seconds left in the third. Houston opened the fourth with a 13-4 run and grabbed a 67-56 lead on Bullard's 3-pointer with 6:55 left.
