Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Zydrunas Ilgauskas has had a way of disappearing at the end of games. Tonight, the Cleveland Cavaliers center loomed larger and larger as the night wore on.

Ilgauskas put a pair of exclamation marks on an outstanding performance with a dunk over two defenders and a block of Steve Nash's potential go-ahead layup with less than 40 seconds left as the Cavaliers held on for a 92-87 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

"It was fun to watch Zydrunas play the way he played," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "He was aggressive. They were trying to double-team him, but he wouldn't let them. We rode him down the stretch and we played through him."

Ilgauskas collected 24 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. He scored seven of his 11 fourth-quarter points in an 11-0 run that gave the Cavaliers an 82-81 lead with 2:32 left and the teams traded baskets until the 7-3 Lithuanian put a stop to it.

He took a high pass from Andre Miller in the paint, wheeled and threw the ball down over a pair of Mavericks, putting the Cavaliers up to stay, 86-85.

At the other end, Nash blew by Miller and seemed to have beaten Ilgauskas as well. The 6-3 guard drove by him, but when he tried to lay the ball up off the glass, Ilgauskas reached over the smaller man and swatted it away.

"We were able to play Nash right to the basket off the pick-and-roll, and I just tried to help on him," Ilgauskas said. "I was fortunate enough to get my hand on the ball."

Miller hit four free throws and Matt Harpring and Cedric Henderson each hit 1-of-2 in the final 29 seconds to seal the Cavaliers' fourth straight victory.

Much of Ilgauskas' problem finishing games as strong as he often starts has come from lack of conditiong. He has been trying to work himself back into shape after sitting out all of last season and all but five games of the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season with a foot injury.

"I feel good," he said after playing a season-high 35 minutes. "I'm getting more minutes and more practice. Guys have been great in helping me, but there's still a long way to go."

"I think anybody in the league knows that he's one of the top four big men in the league," Dallas interim coach Del Harris said. "The problems they have been having lately were mainly when he didn't play."

Ilgauskas hit 10-of-17 from the field and grabbed seven offensive rebounds, most of which he turned into points for the Cavaliers, who had 17 second-chance points.

"How many dunks and layups did he get?" Nash asked "The one jump shot I saw him get down the stretch was a four-footer. We just can't be doing that. He showed tonight what he could be when he's out there."

Miller added 22 points, six assists and six rebounds for Cleveland. Harpring scored 13 and grabbed 10 rebounds, Lamond Murray scored 12 points and Clarence Weatherspoon grabbed 16 boards.

It was a credit to the Mavericks that they were able to take a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter despite being outrebounded, 59-29. But Dallas committed just seven turnovers and hit 10-of-27 from 3-point range while Cleveland had just one 3-pointer in six attempts.

The Mavericks went on a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter and opened a 73-67 lead when Hubert Davis hit three free throws with 7:07 left. They took their largest lead at 81-71 on a 3-pointer by Davis with 5 1/2 minutes to play.

But Ilgauskas re-entered and took over, managing to make 7-6 Shawn Bradley look small in the process. He blocked a shot by the Mavericks center and dunked over him. The one time Bradley got a hand on his shot, Ilgauskas collected the loose ball, stepped back and lofted in a short jumper.

"He was aggressive," Miller said. "He wanted the ball and he told us, `Bring the ball to me so I can go right at Bradley.' We were able to get the ball to him and then he made quick moves that got him to the free-throw line."

Nash collected 21 points and eight assists and Michael Finley added 15, seven rebounds and five assists for the Mavericks, who had their winning streak snapped at three games.

There were 14 lead changes and four ties. Until the two big runs in the fourth quarter neither team managed a double-digit lead. The Cavaliers never led by more than six points.

"It was an unusual game," Harris said. "We got outrebounded by 30 and shot 30 percent in the second half and still should have won the game. We didn't attack their press very well and we didn't do a very good job in the low post defense against Ilgauskas in the fourth quarter. I thought he was the key to the game."

It was the 3-pointer that made the difference for the Mavericks in the first half. Despite being outrebounded 31-13, Dallas led 49-46 at the break after hitting 6-of-14 from long range.

Weatherspoon, Ilgauskas and Harpring did most of the work on the boards for Cleveland, which had more offensive rebounds (14) than Dallas had total.

The presence of Ilgauskas in the paint kept the Mavericks from going inside for most of the first quarter and that allowed the Cavaliers to maintain a slight lead most of the way until Chris Gatling came off the bench and Ilgauskas sat down.

The Mavericks took advantage of the Cavaliers' smaller lineup to go on an 11-2 run midway through the second quarter and take their biggest lead of the half, 39-31, on Howard Eisley's jumper with 5:38 left.
