Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons continued their layup drills right through the first quarter. After that it was garbage time.

Jerry Stackhouse scored 11 of his 30 points in the first quarter as the Pistons ran out to a 16-point lead and cruised to a 92-69 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Dana Barros scored 19 points, Ben Wallace and Joe Smith grabbed 11 rebounds apiece and rookie Mateen Cleaves dished out seven assists and Stackhouse passed for six.

"We knew they played last night (against Sacramento) and we've had a couple days of playing in the snow so we wanted to get out quick," Stackhouse said. "It's really tough for a young team like Atlanta to play back-to-back games, so we knew if we didn't make a lot of mistakes, we'd be in good shape.

Lorenzen Wright led the Hawks with 18 points and Jason Terry scored 14 of his 17 in the third quarter. By that time, however, the game already was over.

"I thought Chucky Atkins did an excellent job with Jason Terry in the first half," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "I thought Jerry Stackhouse had a very good all-around game. Dana Barros came in and obviously played well."

With Stackhouse leading the way, the Pistons ran the Hawks off the court in the first quarter. They scored nine points on the fast break, with Stackhouse connecting on 4-of-6 from the field.

They harrassed the Hawks into 25 percent shooting (5-of-20) from the field in the quarter. Wallace blocked a pair of shots and grabbed five rebounds in the period.

"I'm glad we came out tonight and got this win," Cleaves said. "I think we sucked it up and showed good character by coming out and getting this win, especially the way that Atlanta played against Sacramento last night (a 107-99 victory)."

Stackhouse opened the game with a 3-pointer and followed that by connecting from 13 feet, giving Detroit a 5-0 lead. His 16-footer with 8:50 left in the first put the Pistons up 8-1 and his fast-break dunk with 6:33 to put them on top, 12-5.

They took their largest lead of the quarter, 30-12, when Cleaves capped a 16-3 run by breaking free for a fast-break dunk, then fed Jud Buechler for a layup on the break.

"From the start, Detroit was quicker to the loose balls, quicker to the boards and more active in every way," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "We didn't respond, and you never can be encouraged by that. Everyone experiences this fatigue during the course of the year, but you've just got to play through it. We have to respond, regardless."

The Pistons held a 30-14 lead after one quarter and did not look back. They opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run, including a fast-break dunk by Stackhouse, and took a 36-14 lead on a pair of free throws by Mikki Moore with 9:26 left in the half.

"I was a little worried after the first game back," Irvine said, referring to the Pistons' three-day layoff after a four-game West Coast road trip. "I thought it was going to be a struggle. We caught Atlanta on a back-to-back, but that's the nature of the NBA. I was pleased that we came out and just took care of business."

The Hawks never got closer than 12 points thereafter. They were within 65-53 when Lorenzen Wright converted a three-point play with 3:22 left in the third quarter, but Dana Barros hit a 3-pointer, Stackhouse fed Cleaves for a layup and Stackhouse hit a pair of free throws as the Pistons re-established a 72-53 advantage.

When the Hawks got within 74-59 early in the fourth period, the Pistons responded with a 12-0 run and opened their largest lead at 86-59 on Barros' 3-pointer with 5:27 left.

Atlanta center Dikembe Mutombo was limited to 19 minutes after he got into early foul trouble. He was whistled for his third foul with 7:33 left in the first half when he elbowed Moore in the face.

"I don't think it was fatigue, we just had a poor shooting game," said Mutombo, who contributed just six rebounds and four turnovers. "Our shot selection was not good."

The Hawks shot under 32 percent (25-of-79), were outrebounded 53-41 and committed 19 turnovers in matching their lowest point total of the season.

The 14 points the Pistons allowed in the first quarter was their best defensive effort of the season.
