Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Just in case Steve Nash didn't get the message, Jermaine O'Neal repeated it.

The 22-year-old twice snuffed Nash's layup attempts down the stretch as the Dallas Mavericks were trying to make a run and the Indiana Pacers held on after opening up a 10-point fourth quarter lead to pull out a 97-92 victory.

Jalen Rose led the Pacers with 24 points and eight assists. Reggie Miller scored 22 points and O'Neal finished with 16.

"We called this a must win," Rose said. "We had to come back home and get this. We played extremely well in the fourth quarter on both ends of the floor. Our job calls for us to play for 35-40 minutes and be productive when we're out there."

The Pacers came as close as either team did to taking charge when they went on a 10-0 run midway through the fourth quarter. Travis Best hit a 3-pointer, Miller hit back-to-back jumpers, O'Neal hit 1-of-2 from the line and and Rose banked in a 19-footer that gave Indiana an 89-79 lead with 4:32 left.

The Mavericks mounted an 11-4 surge to get within 93-90 with 24 seconds to go, but O'Neal kept them from getting closer by twice blocking Nash on layup attempts in the final two minutes. The first stopped a layup that would have brought Dallas within 92-86. The second kept the Mavericks from creeping within 92-90 with 40 seconds to go.

"I watch the player's eyes and try to see if they do anything that I can pick up on when I know I have a chance to block," O'Neal said. "In these two cases it happened."

During the run, Michael Finley scored on a drive with 3:31 left for the Mavericks' first basket in five minutes, Howard Eisley hit a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, Dirk Nowitzki made his first basket of the game and Shawn Bradley hit two free throws in the run.

But Rose hit a pair of free throws and after Eisley got the rebound of his own missed 3-pointer, Best stripped the ball from him, was fouled and also hit a pair, closing out the road-weary Mavericks.

Dallas, playing the third game of a six-game road trip, lost their second straight close one after going neck-and-neck with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night.

"It was a tough loss, tough to lose two games in a row we should have won," Eisley said. "We just did not finish both games in the fourth quarter."

The Pacers improved to just 2-7 in games against teams with winning records and lifted their record against Western Conference teams to 2-6, but beat the Mavericks for the eighth time in the teams' last 11 meetings in Indianapolis.

Eisley scored 17 of his career-high 27 points in the third quarter. Finley added 24 and six assists and Nash finished with 13 and eight. Nowitzki, the Mavericks' leading scorer at 18.8 points per game who is shooting 47 percent for the season, made just 1-of-10 shots.

"Right now I'm more concerned with Nellie than basketball on a whole," Nash said, referring to Mavericks coach Don Nelson, who was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and is taking a leave from the team, leaving Del Harris as interim coach.

"There's no blame to Del," Nash added. "It's all our fault. We just have to be prepared to come out with the right frame of mind and give it our best shot and be able to walk out with our head held high."

The Mavericks never trailed in the first quarter and took their largest lead, 29-22, when Nash hit a 3-pointer from the right side with 1:04 to go.

O'Neal scored five straight points to give the Pacers a 39-39 tie with 3:38 left in the first half. The Mavericks led 45-43 at halftime.

Eisley was 1-of-5 in the first half but found his stroke in the third quarter. He hit seven straight from the field, including three 3-pointers, but the Pacers had more than enough to answer.

Rose hit 6-of-8 to score 14 points in the quarter and Best hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final 2 1/2 minutes, helping the Pacers take a 72-69 edge into the fourth quarter.
