Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Maybe the Washington Wizards are hoping Michael Jordan follows Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux out of retirement.

David Wesley scored 25 points and Jamal Mashburn recorded 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to lead the Charlotte Hornets to a 103-89 romp over the apparently uninspired Washington Wizards.

The 6-1 Wesley scored 10 points in a 20-6 third-quarter run that extended an already big bulge. Moved to shooting guard this season after spending most of his career at the point, Wesley capped the run with a 3-pointer to give Charlotte a 75-51 cushion with 5:21 left.

"We came out and took care of business," Wesley said. "The third quarter was huge. We wanted to put the game away. They came out with a little run, that could have been dangerous, but we stepped up."

The Hornets improved to 9-0 when their high scorer is Wesley, who made 10-of-16 shots from the floor.

Point guard Baron Davis had 19 points and nine assists for Charlotte, which had 32 assists while committing just 14 turnovers. The Hornets shot 48 percent (39-of-81) from the field, won for the fourth time in five games and avenged a 95-77 home loss to the Wizards on November 1.

"Offensive execution I thought was really sharp tonight," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "On our first option of our offense, we got a lot of really good layups. It's hard to guard us when we are shooting layups and and it's hard to stay with us when we are shooting layups."

"In order to be considered a good team, we must be consistent," Davis said. "Consistency, the ability to come out every night and play your best. Just beat them. Pound them into the ground. We need to become more consistent. We need to win every night."

Gerard King had 17 points and seven assists off the bench and Juwan Howard added 15 points for Washington, which stumbled to its ninth straight loss. Washington's skid is its longest since a 13-game slide from March 21-April 13, 1995.

The Wizards have sought advice from self-help guru Anthony Robbins and even retired General Norman Schwarzkopf in an effort to stop their losing ways. Owner Michael Jordan has criticized the team as recently as Thursday saying that he was embarrassed to watch.

"Personally, I don't worry about stuff like that," said Rod Strickland, who made only 1-of-9 shots. "I have super respect for that man, but that's not me. So I'm not even going to concern myself with that. I would never say that about any of these guys. No way I would say that. These are my teammates."

Howard and Strickland did not play in the fourth quarter.

"We might as well give some of the other guys an opportunity," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said. "We have six games in nine days, so it just didn't make sense after being that far down."

Mashburn scored 11 points in the first period, helping the Hornets build a 30-24 lead that they never lost.

Charlotte did not pull away until midway through the second period. Tyrone Nesby dunked for his only points to pull the Wizards within 34-30 with 8:07 left. Wesley followed with two free throws nine seconds later to ignite a 19-4 run.

He had seven points on the burst that Davis capped with a 3-pointer for a 49-32 lead with 3:35 before halftime.

Mashburn had 18 points at the break when Charlotte took a 55-45 lead into the locker room.

Jahidi White, who had 12 points and six rebounds, opened the third quarter with a layup. But Elden Campbell answered with a short hook to give Charlotte a 57-47 advantage and the Wizards faced a double-digit deficit the rest of the way. Campbell had nine points and eight boards.

The biggest margin came at 89-63 when rookie Lee Nailon made two free throws with 8:51 to play.
