Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Looking to establish themselves as legitimate frontrunners in the Central Division, the Cleveland Cavaliers ran into and over the reigning division champions at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 24 points and the Cavaliers dominated the fourth quarter en route to their season-high fifth straight win and first victory in eight meetings with the Indiana Pacers, 103-95.

The first-place Cavaliers closed the contest with a 12-3 run and Ilgauskas, who buried 10-of-17 shots and grabbed nine rebounds, was reponsible for eight points during that burst, including a pair of clutch jumpers in the final two minutes.

"We're glad to come in here and get a victory where we have struggled before," Ilgauskas said. "We stepped up in the second half and played better defense. No matter who we play, we have to play good defense."

Andre Miller scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, when Cleveland outscored the defending Eastern Conference champions, 28-14.

"Z (Ilgauskas) was making big shots and getting big rebounds for us," Miller said. "We pushed the ball in the fourth quarter and stayed aggressive and tried to keep attacking their defense."

Jalen Rose scored 24 points and Reggie Miller added 20 for the Pacers, who had a five-game home winning streak snapped. Reggie Miller's jumper with 8:43 to play gave Indiana an 88-81 lead but Andre Miller scored six points during an 8-0 run as the Cavs assumed command.

"It was a big-time blown opportunity," Rose said. "We are all very disappointed and must look for ways to win games and not lose them. When we are below .500, which we are now, we are not getting the job done."

The Cavs had not beaten the Pacers since April 18, 1998 and had not won in Indiana since February 12, 1997.

Matt Harpring scored 13 points, Lamond Murray added 12, Cedric Henderson 11 and Chris Gatling 10 as the Cavs used a balanced attack to complete their first five-game winning streak since February 1999.

Cleveland held a 45-39 rebounding advantage and shot 47 percent (40-of-85).

Andre Miller, who had eight assists and eight rebounds, got the Cavs right back into contention in the fourth quarter. He followed Wesley Person's 3-pointer with a layup and 11-footer and two free throws to give Cleveland a 90-88 lead.

Reggie Miller hit a technical free throw and Jermaine O'Neal converted a three-point play as Indiana took its final lead, 92-90 with 5:05 to play.

But Andre Miller made 1-of-2 at the line and Ilgauskas had a follow shot and free throw before Miller's 13-footer gave the Cavs a 96-92 lead with 2:51 remaining.

O'Neal responded with a free throw but Ilgauskas alternated corners, draining consecutive jumpers from the left and right side to make it 100-93 with 1:21 to go.

"Who the hell is going to stop a 7-3 guy shooting jump shots like he was?" Gatling pondered rhetorically. "They were tough shots and he knocked them down. If he could do it again, we may never know, but his baskets kept our momentum going at the end of the game."

"Wesley Person came in and played great defense and we made some shots when it counted with the shot clock running out," said Ilgauskas. "I think it was just a team win."

Austin Croshere scored 16 points and O'Neal collected 10 and 13 rebounds for the Pacers, who committed 21 turnovers while forcing 13.

Indiana slipped to 0-5 when allowing more than 100 points and fell to 5-5 in division play. The Pacers were outscored, 54-22, in the paint.
