Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The triple threat of Jamal Mashburn, Baron Davis and David Wesley was enough to offset a triple-double by Antoine Walker as the Charlotte Hornets stayed hot with a 99-87 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Mashburn had 20 points and 12 rebounds, Davis added 18, eight and a career-high 14 assists and Wesley scored 19 points. The trio powered the Hornets to their fifth win in six games overall and their eighth consecutive home triumph.

"We got three guys that are really putting the points up and when we have those three doing that, normally we can play pretty well," Hornets coach Paul Silas said.

Mashburn and Wesley each scored eight points in the third quarter, when Charlotte erased a 51-47 halftime deficit and took the lead for good.

"We can't play like that all the time, especially against the better teams in the league," Mashburn said. "They're not going to let you come back. They're going to put you out of your misery real quick."

Davis dominated the final period, going into the low post and taking Boston's smaller guards to the basket or passing to Hersey Hawkins for open jumpers.

"Baron had a banner night," Silas said. "We were posting him up and they couldn't handle it. We would lob over their heads and Baron would make a hoop or kick it out to Hawk. Then Hawk would hit the three."

The threesome also had enough to neutralize Walker, who notched his fifth career triple-double with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Paul Pierce added 19 points for Boston, which has lost three in a row and five of six.

"I thought we played a good ballgame," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "Charlotte was just better."

Pierce scored 13 points, Bryant Stith added 11 and Walker 10 in the first half as the Celtics got their transition game going and sprinted to the lead. But the Hornets dug in on defense in the third quarter and took control.

"The third quarter has been hurting us," Pierce said. "I don't know what it is. I don't know if we come out with the same intensity or what it is. It gets in your head sometimes."

Wesley's 17-footer gave Charlotte the lead for good at 60-59 with 8:22 remaining. Boston had eight points and five turnovers in the first five minutes of the second half.

Mashburn's 3-pointer extended the advantage to 73-66 in the final minute of the third quarter. Walker found Pierce for a layup to get the Celtics within 77-72 with 9:07 left before Davis took charge.

Working against the smaller Kenny Anderson and Randy Brown, the second-year point guard found Hawkins for a jumper and made one himself. Stith made a free throw, but Davis fed Hawkins for a 3-pointer and sank two foul shots for an 86-73 advantage.

"Baron's a tough matchup for any point guard in the league," Anderson said. "He posted up a lot in the fourth quarter and made it tough for us."

Hawkins made another 3-pointer and Davis made two more from the line to open a 91-73 lead with 4:50 to go.

"We finally settled down in the second half and executed much better," Davis said. "We purposely ran a little more in the second half and tried to get some easy baskets."

Elden Campbell scored 17 points and Hawkins and P.J. Brown added 10 apiece for the Hornets, who shot 54 percent (38-of-70) from the field and held a 41-34 rebounding advantage.

Stith scored 14 points for the Celtics, who shot 43 percent (33-of-77), including just 4-of-18 from the arc.
