Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- It was hard to tell which was the best team in the NBA and which was the worst until Allen Iverson took over in the fourth quarter.

Iverson scored eight of his 33 points in a late 14-0 burst that gave the Philadelphia 76ers their fourth straight road win, a tough 99-91 victory over the woeful Chicago Bulls.

The 76ers came in tied for the best record in the NBA with the Utah Jazz, who lost at Cleveland. They built a 15-point lead early in the third quarter, then found themselves trailing the league-worst Bulls less than eight minutes later.

"We know we have no easy games," Iverson said. "Everybody comes out to beat us but we need to play better against teams like this."

Philadelphia (18-6) never trailed in the fourth quarter but did allow Chicago (3-21) to get within 82-81 with 7:08 to play on a basket by Elton Brand, who had 20 points and 14 rebounds.

After a basket by Aaron McKie gave the Sixers a three-point cushion, Iverson took over, scoring eight points in a span of 2:55.

The All-Star guard made a 10-footer and fed Theo Ratliff for a short hook. He drove for a layup and Ratliff sank a jumper for a 92-81 lead with 4:24 remaining. Finally, he capped the burst with a 19-footer and a driving layup, opening the advantage to 96-81 with 3:12 left.

"Allen had his normal game and he went to the basket after they made their run," 76ers coach Larry Brown said. "Theo made a couple of big shots, Allen made a couple of big shots and we were able to close it out."

Iverson made 12-of-25 shots and added eight assists as he helped the Sixers bounce back from a home loss to Dallas on Friday and improve to 11-4 on the road.

"Allen Iverson is getting into the groove and the way he played tonight, it is tough for anyone to guard him," Brown said.

"He is a great player," Sixers forward Toni Kukoc said. "He likes the open court. That is where he is best. That is what he did tonight and it worked out well."

McKie scored 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting for Philadelphia, which has beaten Chicago in seven of the last eight meetings. The Sixers shot 53 percent (37-of-70) from the field.

Ron Artest scored a career-high 29 points for the Bulls, who fell to 1-10 at home.

"I was encouraged with how we played," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "We started to figure out what it takes to come back from deficits."

Chicago opened a 35-30 lead with 6:25 left in the second period on an alley-oop dunk by Ron Mercer, who scored 20 points. But McKie had a three-point play and 3-pointer in a 14-0 spurt that gave Philadelphia a 44-35 advantage with 2:46 to go.

"We came out with effort tonight but we had a breakdown in the second quarter when we went to our bench," Floyd said.

McKie scored 13 points in the second quarter, which ended with the Sixers holding a 52-41 lead. They expanded the margin to 60-45 on two 3-pointers by Vernon Maxwell and a layup by Iverson before the Bulls began their comeback.

Artest scored 15 points in the period, including three straight dunks. Two free throws by Brand gave Chicago a 68-67 lead with 2:44 left.

McKie's 3-pointer gave Philadelphia a 76-73 lead entering the final period.

Ratliff scored 14 points and Todd MacCulloch had 13 rebounds for the Sixers, who held a 42-36 edge on the glass. Maxwell (hip bruise) and George Lynch (hand) joined Philadelphia's list of injured players.

"We lost Vernon Maxwell during the game and George Lynch couldn't play," Brown said. "We have a lot of people injured and a lot of peple stepped up."

Michael Ruffin pulled down 11 rebounds for the Bulls, who missed 10 free throws and gave up 20 points off turnovers.
