Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki picked up right where he left off.

Nowitzki, whose emergence has mirrored his team's early success, scored 31 points as the Dallas Mavericks blew an early lead but rebounded to post a 106-98 triumph over the Boston Celtics.

Nowitzki scored five straight points down the stretch in Sunday's win in Detroit and came out smoking tonight. The third-year forward from Germany scored 11 points in the opening quarter as Dallas opened a 32-15 advantage.

But Boston held a 76-73 edge with 3:47 to go in the third quarter before Dallas closed the period with an 11-3 burst. Gary Trent, who was activated off the injured list Sunday, ignited the burst with a dunk and Steve Nash capped it with two free throws with 2.3 seconds to go for an 84-79 advantage.

Nash finished with 20 points and 14 assists for Dallas, which went 4-2 on its six-game road trip. The Mavericks are 10-7 on the road this season after going 18-23 away from home last season.

"We're a pretty good team, not a great team," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson, a former Celtic. "Just guys playing well together."

"It was a tough trip," Nowitzki said. "We are glad to go home. We're playing very well, so I wouldn't have minded if it had lasted a little longer."

Nowitzki has had a huge four days, including scoring 36 in an upset of Philadelphia on Friday night.

"I don't see myself as a leader," Nowitzki said. "There are a lot of good players on this team. There are a lot of role players and leaders. ... My strength is outside. I credit my teammates for finding me open shots."

Paul Pierce had 30 points and Antoine Walker added 20 and 17 rebounds for Boston, which has dropped four straight. The Celtics lost at home to Dallas for just the third time in 20 games and fell to 28-11 all-time against overall.

"We've got to step up," Walker said. "We're starving for a win. We have one day to prepare for New Jersey. That's our biggest game of the season right now. We have to get a win before we really put ourselves out of contention early on."

Boston held an 8-6 edge just over four minutes into the contest but Nowitzki dunked with 7:29 remaining to ignite a 26-7 run to end the quarter.

Nowitzki made 5-of-6 shots in the quarter while Shawn Bradley and Nash had seven points apiece. The Mavericks made 13-of-19 shots in the quarter while Boston made just seven of their 25 shots, including only one of seven 3-point attempts.

Dallas still held a 53-39 edge with 3:46 left in the opening half when Pierce's layup keyed an 11-6 burst to end the quarter.

Boston kept chipping away but a 3-pointer by Nash with 7:34 to go in the third quarter left Dallas with a 69-63 cushion. But again Pierce answered, with a pair of 16-footers 29 seconds apart.

Vitaly Potapenko put Boston on top with a three-point play with 5:09 left in the quarter and gave Boston a 76-73 edge with a 13-footer with 3:47 to go. But Trent had a dunk to get Dallas within a point 21 seconds later and Nowitzki followed with a 3-pointer to give the Mavericks the lead for good.

Boston never got closer than five over the final 12 minutes.

"There are unselfish players," Nash said. "Guys are fighting to rebound and defend down the stretch, which were never our strengths but are now our strong suits."
