Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- These are not the Los Angeles Clippers of old.

Lamar Odom scored 24 points and had 10 assists as the Clippers, playing on national television for the first time in three years, handed the Minnesota Timberwolves their second straight loss, 103-96.

"Tonight was a very big win," Clippers forward Sean Rooks said. "As much as people want to deny it, there is no doubt that the national TV game is something important. Anytime the Clippers can come out and let people see what's going on is big. We showed them that this team definitely has a major upside."

The Clippers were clinging to a one-point lead when Odom hit a short hook shot to make it 99-96 with 40 seconds to play. The second-year sensation blocked a shot by LaPhonso Ellis on the next possession.

"He stepped up and hit a really big shot," said Los Angeles guard Eric Piatkowski said. "Everybody in the arena knew he was going to shoot it. That's why he's our go-to man and that's why he handles the ball so much."

Odom made two foul shots with 19 seconds to go before Terrell Brandon turned over the ball with 13 seconds left. A pair of free throws by Piatkowski with 7.5 seconds to play capped the scoring.

"We're sending a message to the entire league that this isn't the same team as last year," Piatkowski said. "We are a young team playing well and we're playing very competitive every night."

Piatkowski hit three of the Clippers' four 3-pointers.

Los Angeles held Minnesota without a basket for the final 6:22 and made 7-of-9 free throws down the stretch as it snapped a three-game losing streak in the series.

The Clippers have beaten some premier teams in the league this season, including New York, Orlando and Phoenix.

"They executed well tonight," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "In this league there are no bad players. There are some bad teams, but this team we played tonight was the same team that went down and beat Phoenix, so we knew coming in they were a good team with good players."

Piatkowski scored 19 points and rookie Darius Miles added a season-high 17 for the Clippers, who shot 56 percent (40-of-71) from the field and outrebounded the Timberwolves, 44-29.

"I just play ball," Miles said. "I try to bring my game every night, just be a factor."

Los Angeles has alternated wins and losses since snapping a two-game losing streak against Orlando on December 11.

Ellis hit a pair of foul shots to give Minnesota a 92-91 lead with 5:23 to go. Miles' hook 21 seconds later put Los Angeles ahead for good.

Minnesota's Kevin Garnett scored 22 points, including six in a 12-2 run late in the third quarter that opened an 81-71 lead.

"No disrespect to Golden State or the Clippers, but these are games we're supposed to win," Garnett said. "I can't believe we came out and played the way we played. I'm thinking now what I should have done differently and I'm not a guy that feels pressure. I'm going to come out and play regardless of any situation and give my all."

Corey Maggette scored six points in a 12-0 run that gave Los Angeles a 24-17 lead in the final minute of the first quarter. The Wolves claimed a 53-52 halftime lead after Sam Mitchell scored five points in the last two minutes of the second quarter.

"Minnesota is a great team," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "I am not going to keep giving the excuse that we are a young team, but when we play great we will win."
