Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Danny Ferry scored 16 points against his former team and Derek Anderson keyed a decisive second-half run as the San Antonio Spurs snapped the Cleveland Cavaliers' six-game winning streak, 94-77.

Ferry had 10 points in the second half while all nine of Anderson's second-half points came in a 22-6 burst that turned a tie game into a 16-point fourth-quarter lead for San Antonio.

"Anyone who tells you that playing against your old team is not a big game is lying," Ferry said. "I was real excited. I had a great time in Cleveland, and I had a great time playing against them."

Tim Duncan added 14 points and 12 rebounds while David Robinson chipped in with 13 boards. It was the third straight win for the Spurs, who have won 11 straight home meetings with Cleveland.

"That was one of the our better performances of the season," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We executed well on both ends of the court. Defensively it was good defense, they shared the ball. It was a good effort against a good team."

Chris Gatling scored 18 points and Lamond Murray and Andre Miller added 14 apiece for Cleveland, which was in the midst of its longest winning streak in more than three years. The loss dropped the Cavaliers to 3-26 all-time in San Antonio.

"We played hard," Miller said. "If we keep playing as a team we'll be all right."

The Spurs were cruising with a 59-46 lead with 7:22 left in the third quarter when the Cavaliers went on a 15-2 run to tie the game. Clarence Weatherspoon six-foot hook ignited the burst that was capped by Matt Harpring's free throw with 3:23 to go.

Lamond Murray and Andre Miller had four points apiece in the burst.

San Antonio, which never trailed in the game, responded with a long 3-pointer by Terry Porter and put away the game with a run that began in the final minute of the quarter.

Clinging to a 68-65 lead, San Antonio seized control beginning with Ferry's 3-pointer with 59 seconds left. Porter had two free throws 16 seconds later and Anderson made it 75-65 with two more from the line with 11 seconds to play.

The fourth quarter began and Anderson kept the pressure on, burying an 18-footer and a free throw. Miller temporarily halted the run with two free throws but Ferry drained a 16-footer with 9:49 left and Steve Kerr extended the lead to 83-67 with a 3-pointer 18 seconds later.

Cleveland never got closer than 12 points thereafter.

It looked like the Spurs' big men would dominate early as Duncan and Robinson scored six points apiece in the opening 12 minutes. San Antonio led 24-19 after the opening quarter and pushed the lead to 40-30 with 6:46 left in the opening half.

Sean Elliott's 3-pointer with 2:58 to go in the second quarter put the Spurs up 47-35 and ignited an 8-0 run. Duncan had 10 points, as did Malik Rose, who made all four of his shots off the bench.

San Antonio had eight blocked shots in the first half, six by David Robinson.

"(David) blocked a few shots early and they really became aware of his presence," Duncan said. "I think they had to change some shots because of him."

"We had a couple of our shots blocked early on and that took a lot of our edge off offensively," Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman said.

The Cavaliers were without swingman Wesley Person, who will miss the team's next two road games due to an ulnar nerve contusion in his right elbow. It is the same injury that forced him to miss eight games earlier this season.
