Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Nick Van Exel made a running bank shot with 21 seconds to go and a steal just before time expired to give the Denver Nuggets a 108-106 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

A 3-pointer by Jerry Stackhouse, who scored 30 points, capped an 11-2 surge and pulled Detroit into a 106-106 tie with 41 seconds to play.

Working against Chucky Atkins, the lefthanded Van Exel drove the right side and threw up a shot over center Ben Wallace that banked high off the backboard and in, giving the Nuggets the lead.

"The play was designed for Voshon Lenard," Van Exel said. "I looked at him and he was covered. I saw an open lane and luckily the shot went in."

"Nick made that big shot at the end," Pistons coach George Irvine said. "We had a foul to give and we didn't use it."

The Pistons went to Stackhouse, whose jumper was partially blocked by James Posey. After a scramble, the ball bounced to Atkins outside the 3-point circle, but Van Exel slapped it away from him with less than two seconds to play and launched a half-court shot that spent the clock.

"At the end Jerry had a good look at the basket and he got it blocked," Irvine said.

Antonio McDyess scored 29 points and Raef LaFrentz added 22 for the Nuggets, who trailed by 14 points late in the third quarter but rallied for their third straight win, matching their longest streak of the season.

"When we were down 14, I was worried," McDyess admitted. "They were hitting shots even though we were contesting. No one gave up. That was the important thing."

Joe Smith scored 18 points and rookie Mateen Cleaves added 14 for the Pistons, who won at Phoenix on Tuesday but could not complete a sweep of a two-game road trip.

"There's no excuses," Stackhouse said. "It wasn't fatigue. This was the type of game we should win."

"It wasn't fatigue. We just didn't finish the game off like we were supposed to," Atkins said.

If the Pistons were not tired, they sure looked it. A basket by Stackhouse gave Detroit an 89-75 lead with 2:11 left in the third quarter but Denver scored 29 of the next 35 points.

McDyess and LaFrentz scored six points apiece and Lenard added five during the burst. Consecutive jumpers by Van Exel, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds, gave the Nuggets a 93-91 lead with 8:09 remaining and a 3-pointer by Lenard extended the advantage to 104-95 with 5:10 to go.

"We were missing shots at the end and we had guys hardly getting back on defense," Irvine said. "They were either tired or didn't care enough to get back on defense."

"It looked like they got a little tired toward the end," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said.

The Pistons stormed right back. After the teams traded a pair of points, Atkins made a 3-pointer and Ben Wallace scored inside and added a free throw before Stackhouse's 3-pointer tied it.

Posey scored 11 points and LaFrentz pulled down 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who shot 50 percent (46-of-92) from the field and survived 9-of-17 free-throw shooting.

Atkins had 11 points and eight assists and Ben Wallace grabbed 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 48 percent (43-of-89) and held a 45-36 rebounding edge.

Detroit had not scored more than 92 points in its last six games.
