Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn never lost faith in his shot and made sure the Charlotte Hornets never lost the lead.

Mashburn overcame an awful shooting performance with a pair of clutch 3-pointers down the stretch as the Hornets held off the Minnesota Timberwolves, 83-74, for their fifth straight win.

Through the first 3 1/2 quarters, Mashburn had made just 2-of-11 shots. He came in averaging 20.7 points per game but struggled from the field and looked to pass, finishing with nine assists.

"I never want to stop shooting," Mashburn said. "I always want to ccontinue to shoot, no matter what the percentages, and keep on playing. I'm not the type of player who lacks in confidence. I don't worry about any misses or anything like that. I just keep on shooting, because I have been shooting for a long time. I spend too many hours in the summer shooting the ball to stop shooting when I'm in a slump."

Even without Mashburn's offense, the Hornets still held a 65-56 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Timberwolves came alive, tying it with an 11-2 spurt.

That's when Mashburn emerged. His 3-pointer stopped the surge and gave Charlotte a 70-67 lead with 6:01 remaining.

"We moved the ball really well and Mash got the wide-open three," Hornets guard David Wesley said. "It was a big shot. When he had been struggling all night, for him to hit that shot (was important)."

After Wesley's tough running banker gave the Hornets the lead for good at 74-72 with 1:39 to go, Mashburn added two free throws to double the lead 17 seconds later.

Kevin Garnett countered with a hook in the lane but Mashburn answered with another 3-pointer that opened a 79-74 advantage and took the fight out of the Wolves. Wesley made a steal and clinching layup and Mashburn added two free throws to close the scoring.

"I thought a couple of times down the stretch we passed on some open shots," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "I've told our guys that you have to have confidence in yourself to shoot the ball. My philosophy is, if you're open, shoot it and make the shot."

Wesley scored 25 points and Mashburn had 10 of his 15 in the final six-plus minutes for the Hornets, which beat the Wolves for the fourth straight time.

"It was important for us to get this victory, especially on their home court," Mashburn said. "They're a pretty tough team. They always seem to play competitively."

Charlotte also limited Minnesota All-Star forward Kevin Garnett to 20 points on 9-of-22 shooting. Defensive stalwart P.J. Brown had primary responsibilities.

"A guy like that, you're not going to be able to stop," Brown said. "I just tried to keep him from having a ferocious night -- 30 or 35 points. I thought I did a decent job and I got a lot of help from my teammates."

Terrell Brandon scored 14 points for the Timberwolves, who have lost three in a row for the first time since November 6-9.

"You can't get frustrated," Garnett said. "The main thing about the season is that it is long. We all have to understand that. We have to stay together as a team. When you're losing, it's easy to go your own way."

The Wolves trailed 61-54 entering the final period and 65-56 after a layup by Brown with 9:22 remaining. But LaPhonso Ellis triggered the tying run with a three-point play and capped it with a follow shot to make it 67-67.

Wesley scored 10 points in the first half as Charlotte grabbed a 39-38 lead. He added another nine in the third period.

"It's one of those things when you get to feeling it," Wesley said. "I was catching the ball real clean and letting it go and it was coming off just right."

Brown had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Elden Campbell added 10 and nine for Charlotte, which shot 41 percent (33-of-81).

Ellis and Wally Szczerbiak scored 11 points apiece and Dean Garrett grabbed 12 boards for Minnesota, which shot 38.5 percent (30-of-78) and held a 49-40 rebounding edge.
