Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones came up big for the second straight night, matching a season high with 31 points as the Miami Heat posted an 86-80 victory over the struggling New Jersey Nets.

Jones made 8-of-15 shots from the field and also was clutch at the free-throw line, making 13-of-16 attempts. He also scored 31 points in Friday's victory over Cleveland.

"I need to be aggressive, attack the rim, put the pressure on the officials to make a call or let them miss a shot or make a shot," Jones said. "I just go out with the attitude that I have to create in order for us to be a pretty good team."

Brian Grant added 18 points and Tim Hardaway 15 for the Heat, who have rebounded to win consecutive games following Wednesday's embarrassing 65-56 loss to Charlotte.

Stephon Marbury did his best to keep the Nets in the game as he scored 37 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

"Some guys made shots and some guys didn't. That's all you're going to get now," Marbury said. "We've got to continue to shoot and eventually it will happen. It's a bad time for us as far as playing basketball. We have to do things off the court to try to enhance our basketball because right now we're a little frustrated on defense and it looks like we're fighting the offense."

Aaron Williams chipped in 12 points and a season-high 19 rebounds for New Jersey, which has lost four straight and 14 of its last 17 games.

Miami had a seven-point lead entering the fourth quarter and pushed the advantage to 82-70 with 3:06 remaining on a 3-pointer by Jones, who was 2-of-5 from behind the arc.

Marbury, who recently returned from an ankle injury, scored his club's final 10 points, but the Nets got no closer than the final score. Marbury made 12-of-22 shots from the field but handed out just one assist.

"They really never got over the hump," Hardaway said. "That is what we normally do. We let teams get over the hump on us. But when we try to come back we never get over that hump. We could not let them get back over that hump. We had to sustain that run and play harder and get the win."

One of the league's worst shooting teams, the Nets again struggled from the floor at just 37 percent (30-of-81).

"We did some good things, but we also broke down, especially on the defensive end," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "We just couldn't get over the hump. Shooting, I think in this league, is a lost art. Those who can, play for 15 years. I've just got to believe that sooner or later I'm going to have guys who are going to knock shots down."

The Nets also had plenty of trouble containing Jones in the first half, when he scored 21 points as the Heat built a 43-38 advantage. Jones made 6-of-11 shots from the field in the half.

Marbury scored on a drive to the basket to pull the Nets into a 52-52 tie with 5:34 left in the third quarter.

But Miami closed the period impressively, using a 14-7 run to end the quarter and open a 66-59 lead. Grant had six points in the burst that put the Heat in front for good.

Anthony Mason added 10 points and 11 rebounds against his former team as the Heat shot 47.5 percent (29-of-61).
