Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- For 36 minutes, the Washington Wizards hung with the Portland Trail Blazers. But reality hit the NBA's second-worst team early in the fourth quarter.

The Wizards went nearly nine minutes without a basket in the final period while the Trail Blazers got well with an 87-70 victory behind 25 points and 13 rebounds from Rasheed Wallace.

Trailing 60-59 entering the final 12 minutes, the Wizards misssed five straight shots and committed six turnovers, watching helplessly as the Blazers began a 19-2 run.

Wallace sank a free throw and Shawn Kemp buried a 19-footer before Wallace's 3-pointer made it 79-61 with 3:37 to play.

The 6-11 Wallace hit 10-of-18 shots, 4-of-5 free throws and handed out five assists in 40 minutes. He had all 10 of his fourth-quarter points during the decisive burst.

Arvydas Sabonis scored 16 points and Damon Stoudamire added 15, seven rebounds and six assists for the Blazers, who avoided their first three-game losing streak of the season with their fifth straight win over the floundering Wizards.

"Our guys did a good job defensively (in the fourth quarter)," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Our guys did a good job of shutting down the paint and getting the ball to our guys in the post, who most nights have a chance to dominate. Rasheed and (Sabonis) in particular came through for us."

Rod Strickland and Obinna Ekezie scored 13 points apiece for Washington, which was outscored 27-11 in the fourth quarter en route to its 13th loss in 14 games. Only Chicago (3-24) has a worse record than the Wizards (5-23).

"We've played stretches of good basketball this season," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said. "But our downfall has been we haven't been able to finish the second half. We have to come back after Christmas and know that we must improve in that area. We haven't given up and we haven't backed off against anyone. We just have to do better at finishing the game."

Felipe Lopez and Gerard King added 10 points each for Washington, which shot 41 percent (27-of-65) and yielded 29 points off 26 turnovers.

The Blazers shot 47 percent (37-of-78) and held a 41-32 rebounding advantage.

The Wizards made just 3-of-21 shots in the fourth quarter after closing within a point on Ekezie's 13-footer with 11 seconds left in the third period.

"They're a good team and they just stepped it up," Ekezie said. "I think in the fourth quarter we just didn't make the shots. They were the same kind of shots we were getting at the beginning but we just didn't make them."

Kemp opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a 24-footer, Bonzi Wells made a layup and Wallace slammed home a feed from Stoudamire to make it 67-59 with 8:22 to play.

"After last night's game (a 116-96 loss at Denver), guys had to come in and check themselves," Wells said. "It starts defensively. People in this league can score so we have to play tough defense. Coach had been stressing shooting straight shots because they should adjust to us, not us adjust to them. After the loss last night, guys wanted to come out and play hard. Defense won the game for us tonight."

Wallace hit a four-footer and Sabonis dunked before Tyrone Nesby hit a pair of free throws to end the Blazers' 11-0 run to open the final period. Wallace converted a three-point play, Kemp connected from 19 feet and Wallace made his 19th 3-pointer in 43 attempts this season, opening an 18-point cushion -- Portland's biggest lead of the night.

"We couldn't hit any shots at the end and that is what killed us," Nesby said. "We killed ourselves."
