Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Sean Rooks made a follow shot with 1.7 seconds remaining after Keyon Dooling missed a layup to give the Los Angeles Clippers a 92-90 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Dooling made two free throws to give Los Angeles a 90-87 lead with 28.9 seconds left. Vancouver's Mike Bibby missed a 3-pointer from the right corner but got his own rebound and connected from behind the arc from the left sideline with 11.9 seconds to go, tying it at 90-90.

"The Clippers were collapsing hard on defense and my teammates were able to find me and I made the shot," Bibby said. "It just hurt because we couldn't keep them from making a big shot on the other end and getting the win."

After a timeout, Dooling drove the lane and threw the ball up. It hit the rim before Rooks tipped it in.

"When I tipped it, I knew I had a good angle on it," Rooks said. "I just wanted to make sure I got it hard enough. It was good. It came when we needed it. Dooling's shot is really hard to block so I knew that if I was there I just had to try and get a good tip. Luck was on our floor."

Vancouver took a 20-second timeout to set up a play with 1.7 seconds remaining. Shareef Abdur-Rahim tried a 25-foot 3-pointer that was rejected by Lamar Odom, who recorded a career-high nine blocks.

"Our inability to make shots down the stretch and their tenacious defense is what gave them the victory tonight," Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "I'm concerned about how the team had been performing in the last two minutes of games. Mike Bibby hit a big shot to tie the game but you can't rely on that every night because more people have to step up and make shots."

Odom also scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds and Brian Skinner added 13 and five for the Clippers, who have won back-to-back games for the second time this season. They posted consecutive victories on November 15-16.

"When you win the game, you can't forget how you did it," Odom said. "I just want our guys to feel that sense of urgency. We were just lucky to get our of this one."

"This was a great test," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "They came back and got the lead. We kept our composure, did a good job and executing down the stretch and Sean made a great tip-in."

Abdur-Rahim had 26 points and eight rebounds, Michael Dickerson contributed 19 and Bibby 18 for the Grizzlies, who suffered their fourth straight road loss. Vancouver has dropped eight of its last nine games away from home and eight of nine overall.

The Clippers owned a 16-point lead after one quarter and were up by 10 points as late as the third quarter. But the Grizzlies outscored Los Angeles, 24-10, to go ahead, 67-63, with 34 seconds left in the period.

"We dug ourselves into a hole that we were able to come out of tonight," Dickerson said. "But it's always tough to fight back from a big hole because some nights guys aren't going to have it. We just need to start off strong and maybe we will be on the other end of the win column."

Vancouver took its largest advantage, 73-68, on Abdur-Rahim's layup with 10:25 remaining. The Clippers scored the next five points, forging a 73-73 tie on Cory Maggette's driving dunk with 9:31 left.

Abdur-Rahim's running jump shot gave the Grizzlies a four-point lead but Maggette and Dooling hit consecutive jumpers to knot the game at 79-79.

Dickerson's 23-foot jumper again gave Vancouver the lead before Dooling made 1-of-2 from the line and a 3-pointer. Odom added another basket from beyond the arc as the Clippers took an 86-81 lead with 2:45 left. After Abdur-Rahim's tip-in, Odom restored Los Angeles' five-point lead with two free throws.

The Grizzlies closed within 88-87 with 28.9 seconds to go as Dickerson and Abdur-Rahim each converted two free throws.

Eric Piatkowski scored 11 points and Maggette had 10 as Los Angeles' bench outscored Vancouver's reserves, 38-14. The Clippers shot 42 percent (36-for-86) from the field but were outrebounded, 47-40. Jeff McInnis tied a career-high with 10 assists.

Othella Harrington chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds and rookie Stromile Swift had eight and seven, respectively, for the Grizzlies, who were outscored, 50-38, in the paint.
