Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn scored eight of his 27 points in overtime as the surging Charlotte Hornets held off the Cleveland Cavaliers, 115-110, to stretch their winning streak to a season-high seven games.

Mashburn hit two baskets in a 6-0 run that started the overtime and the Hornets never trailed in the extra period, leading by as much as eight.

Charlotte opened a 3 1/2-game lead over Cleveland in the Central Division and joined Utah and the Los Angeles Lakers as the only NBA teams with 20 wins. The Hornets began the day percentage points behind Philadelphia for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

David Wesley scored 30 or more points for the sixth time this season, totaling 32 for the Hornets, who posted their second straight overtime victory. Charlotte defeated San Antonio, 88-84, on Saturday.

"We've been able to play great in overtime," Wesley said. "We've been able to come up with some big stops defensively."

"David and Jamal are our main guys an any given night," Charlotte coach Paul Silas added. "We expect them to come through. David came through in overtime against San Antonio and tonight it was Jamal."

With nine minutes left, it appeared that Charlotte could start thinking about its upcoming six-game road trip as Lee Nailon hit two foul shots to give the Hornets an 87-73 lead.

"We're on a good roll, so it's a good time to go out there (on the West Coast)," Wesley added. "We have to continue to execute well on offense and defense. The difference going out West is transition defense. We didn't do a good job of that tonight."

Cleveland did not go quietly as the backcourt tandem of Andre Miller and Matt Harpring fueled the comeback, combining for 21 of Cleveland's 26 points in the fourth quarter.

Harpring hit a jumper from the right baseline to tie it 99-99 with 21 seconds left and force overtime. But Cleveland's hopes were dashed when Harpring picked up his sixth foul just 14 seconds into the extra period.

Miller scored a career-high 30 points, including a baseline drive that pulled Cleveland within 99-97 with 1:01 to play. Harpring, who returned from a sprained Achilles tendon late in the third quarter, finished with 25.

Despite the strong backcourt play, the Cavaliers suffered their fourth straight loss, matching a season high.

"Excluding the first quarter, when we missed five layups and turned it over, we played pretty good but we have to play 48 minutes," Harpring said.

"They executed down the stretch better than us," Cleveland forward Chris Gatling added. "We have to be better than them. We have to be perfect. Charlotte has the experience and can win without being perfect."

Harpring hit two foul shots to tie it, 68-68, with 3:26 left in the third quarter. But the Hornets exploited Harpring's absence to open a double-figure lead.

Charlotte closed the third period with an 11-1 run and held Cleveland scoreless for the first 3 1/2 minutes of the final period.

"Harpring provided a defensive presence for us, which was a factor when he was in the game," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "When he was out, we lost a little on the defensive presence. Mashburn and Wesley were tough to stop."

When Harpring returned, he immediately gave the Cavaliers a lift offensively, completing a three-point play to bring Cleveland within 87-80 with 6:27 to play.

With Charlotte leading, 93-84, Harpring hit a 15-footer and Lamond Murray drilled a 3-pointer, making it 93-89 with 4:09 left. Wesley converted two foul shots to give Charlotte a 99-95 lead with 1:12 to go.

The Hornets matched their longest winning streak since ending last season with seven straight victories.

"Tonight was a tough game but we pulled it out," Charlotte guard Baron Davis said. "We made big plays down the stretch. We're not playing the best basketball but we're playing good enough to win."

Early today, Charlotte activated forward Derrick Coleman, who was placed on the injured list on November 18 due to a lack of physical conditioning and missed the team's last 18 games. But Coleman was not much of a factor, scoring just four points and grabbing one rebound in 13 minutes.
