Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored a season-high 38 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 21 as the Dallas Mavericks cruised to a 114-93 romp over the Seattle SuperSonics.

Finley connected on 16-of-22 shots, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, as Dallas won for the 10th time in 12 games. Finley also grabbed nine rebounds and handed out eight assists.

"I had some good looks at the basket and my teammates found me," said Finley, who was one point shy of his career best. "I got into a nice little rhythm early. As a team we played well tonight. It was a good win over a good club."

Nowitzki shot 8-of-18 and grabbed 11 boards, helping the Mavericks defeat the SuperSonics for the second time in three meetings this season.

"That's always a big key for us," said Nowitzki about rebounding. "Everybody knows we're not a big rebounding team, so everybody's got to find a way to do it. Even though we lost the rebounding game, we kept it close (48-39). As long as we do that I think we have a great chance to win the game."

Steve Nash recorded 22 points and eight assists for the Mavericks, who shot 51 percent (41-of-81), including 10-of-22 from long range.

"The big three were all hitting and we're pretty good when that happens," said Dallas coach Don Nelson about Finley, Nowitzki and Nash. "We take nothing away from Seattle, they're a very fine team and they are going to be right there in the hunt for a playoff spot with us and probably a couple of other teams."

Earlier in the day the Mavericks announced that Donn Nelson will take over as head coach next week while his father recovers from prostate cancer surgery. Don Nelson will coach the team through January 3 and is expected to miss six to eight weeks after the surgery.

Finley scored 21 points, making 12-of-14 shots, in the first half when the Mavs built a 57-51 lead.

Dallas used its second options on offense and opened the third period with an 11-2 tear to open a 68-53 lead when Shawn Bradley completed a three-point play with 9:17 to go. Harold Eisley had a pair of 3-pointers and a short jumper in the run.

Eisley had 12 points and eight assists while Bradley tallied seven and seven boards in only 18 minutes due to foul trouble.

Gary Payton had 23 points and nine assists and Brent Barry scored a season-high 20 points off the bench for Seattle, which suffered its second straight loss following a season-high five-game winning streak.

Seattle's starting frontcourt of Rashard Lewis, Jelani McCoy and Patrick Ewing combined for just 22 points and 20 rebounds. Lewis was limited to 16 minutes due to the stomach flu.

The Sonics committed 20 turnovers, leading to 27 points for the Mavs. Seattle had just 18 team assists.

"It was just one of the worst displays of baketball I have ever seen," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "Dallas wanted it more than us on both ends of the floor. For three quarters as bad as our defense was, we didn't find anyone to reach down deep inside and find out a way to pull out that game."

In the first quarter Nowitzki scored 11 points and Finley added 10 as Dallas held a 26-19 lead.

"Offensively we pretty much had it going in the first quarter," said Nowitzki, who shot 5-of-9 in the opening period. "We got some rebounds and started running and hit a couple of easy layups and had some dunks and that was key."

Barry had four points during an 11-0 spurt that gave Seattle a 38-37 edge on Payton's basket with 5:53 left in the second quarter. Eisley and Payton exchanged missed jumpers before Hubert Davis completed a three-point play to put Dallas ahead for good, 40-38, with 5:26 remaining in the second.

The Sonics closed with one twice thereafter, the final time coming when Payton hit a 13-footer 1:53 before halftime to make it 47-46. Finley answered with a 21-footer with 1 1/2 minutes left and added a basket and free throw 24 seconds later.

Dallas took a 92-80 lead into the final period and did not let the margin fall below 10 points.
