Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Nick Van Exel's three-point play with 4.7 seconds left gave the Denver Nuggets a come-from-behind 109-108 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Nuggets, who trailed by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, held on when Jeff McInnis missed a wide open 3-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer.

"We had no business winning that game," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "We were very fortunate to come out on top. That is a good team and they are getting better all the time."

Denver's Antonio McDyess scored 35 points on 14-of-24 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds. Voshon Lenard scored 18, including four 3-pointers, and Raef Lafrentz added 16 and 10 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have won six in a row at home against the Clippers.

"McDyess had a terrible cold and he was on his last legs but all our guys stepped up at the end," Issel said. "They had no answer for Antonio tonight so we tried to go to him as much as possible. He doesn't have to score every time but you should at least explore going through him on every possession."

Los Angeles opened up a 106-97 lead with 4 1/2 minutes to play on Corey Maggette's layup off a feed from Lamar Odom. But the Nuggets scored five straight and got within 106-102 after James Posey's tip-in with 2:41 to play.

McInnis hit a jumper to restore a six-point advantage, but Van Exel scored off a rebound with one minute left to make it 108-104. After a missed shot by Odom, McDyess scored to pull Denver within two.

"Basically we gave them the game," Odom said. "We could have won if we did things right. We made some poor decisions, including myself."

Sean Rooks missed a seven-footer with 13 seconds left and the rebound went to Posey. Van Exel took the ball the length of the court for the tying basket but was fouled by Rooks. He made the ensuing free throw and finished with 13 points.

"We didn't play with a lot of energy tonight but we hung in there to the end and made some big shots," Van Exel said. "It would've been a major loss. They played well. It's a shame that they lost but I'll take the win."

Van Exel added 14 assists to post his ninth double-double of the season. McDyess has scored 30 or more four times this year and 28 or more 10 times.

"We played well enough and probably deserved to win," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We played with great effort. We played great for 47 minutes and 20 seconds. It's getting painful to lay well and not have anything to show for it."

There were 13 lead changes and seven ties in a high-scoring first half. Posey's 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining in the first half gave the Nuggets a 62-61 lead at intermission.

The Nuggets' Keon Clark was suspended for the game by Issel for missing the morning shootaround. He is expected to play on Thursday in Denver's game against Toronto.

Odom scored 21 points and Eric Piatkowski added 15 for the Clippers, who have lost eight of their last nine overall against the Nuggets. Maggette had 14 points off the bench.

Los Angeles had a solid night handling and shooting the basketball. It shot 49 percent (45-of-92) and amassed 29 assists. The Clippers turned the ball over just 10 times.

Mark Strickland had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Denver for his first double-double of the season.
