Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady continued to make people forget that the Orlando Magic acquired two superstars this past offseason.

One day after learning he would be without fellow forward Grant Hill for the remainder of the season, McGrady scored 26 points to help the Magic beat Hill's former team, the Detroit Pistons, 102-96.

The Magic announced on Wednesday that Hill would be undergoing season-ending ankle surgery and would not return this season.

McGrady, who has shared the court with Hill just four times since joining the Magic with him this offseason, has been carrying much of the load thus far and tonight was no different.

"I think guys now understand what went on yesterday, the news that Grant is out so now guys are more focused, more capable of just playing their role, just understanding where they fit in the system," the quickly maturing McGrady said.

McGrady hit 11-of-23 shots, grabbed five rebounds and had two blocks, including a key swat of a potential 3-point attempt by Jerry Stackhouse late in the fourth quarter.

The NBA's fifth-leading scorer also got some help from point guard Darrell Armstrong, who had 22 points and a career high-tying 14 assists as the Magic snapped a two-game skid.

"This was probably the best win of the season because so many players contributed," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I'm really proud of the guys because there is a lot of stuff obviously going on with this whole Grant Hill thing. This was an important game."

Stackhouse scored 34 points for the Pistons, who had won three of four.

"They have not had Grant Hill all year and they have been a pretty good team," Stackhouse said. "I am sure that team is not holding all they have on Grant Hill. They have a soon-to-be-great player in McGrady and he has the ability to carry that team."

McGrady showed off his value to the Magic in crunch time, and not with his offense. With Orlando clinging to a 95-90 lead with 2 1/2 minutes to play, the 6-8, 210-pound 21-year-old rose to stuff Stackhouse's 3-point attempt, swatting the ball into the seats as the Detroit guard fell to the floor.

"I was a little patient tonight and guys stepped up and I really didn't have to do too much tonight," McGrady said. "My main thing was to go back at the other end and play defense."

The Magic failed to capitalize on the other end but McGrady got the ball back by drawing a charge from former Orlando center Ben Wallace on Detroit's next trip.

The two big defensive plays set the stage for a baseline jumper by Michael Doleac that gave Orlando 97-91 lead with less than a minute left.

"I think that's how we're going to have to play this year," Armstrong said. "I don't think the media knows that, ESPN, CNN, nobody, NBA Today. But it's like almost everybody has written us off."

McGrady also had a pair of steals and two blocked shots with just two turnovers in 42 minutes. Monty Williams scored 15 points off the bench for Orlando, which took the lead for good in the second quarter.

Chucky Atkins scored 16 points and Wallace added six and 19 rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 41 percent (33-of-81) and held a 48-46 rebounding edge.

Dana Barros scored 11 points and Joe Smith and rookie Mateen Cleaves added 10 apiece for Detroit, which made just 24-of-42 free throws (57 percent).

McGrady snapped a 39-39 tie midway through the second quarter and followed it up with an eight-foot hook shot. Armstrong made a technical free throw and McGrady followed one of his own missses, tipping it home for a 46-39 lead with 4:37 left in the first half.

McGrady's 17-footer three minutes later made it 51-43.

The Magic shot 44 percent (40-of-91) and forced 16 turnovers.
