Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored 25 points as the Dallas Mavericks continued their strong play with a 105-96 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Mavericks took command of the game early, taking advantage of a team that came in off a tough, one-point loss at Denver.

"We did what we were supposed to do," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We took care of business at the beginning of the game."

After Lamar Odom made a jumper to give the Clippers a 4-2 lead, Dallas went on a 15-2 run to take control. Steve Nash scored five points while Dirk Nowitzki and Howard Eisley had four each.

The victory marked the earliest the Mavericks have reached the 20-win plateau since the 1988-89 season.

"From the time I've been here, with 20 wins you would think we would be in April," Finley said. "But to come this early in this season, it is good just to see where we have come from and where we are going."

Eisley's 18-footer capped the first-quarter scoring and gave the Mavericks a 28-15 lead.

Nash scored 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting and dished out eight assists while Nowitzki scored 17 despite 4-of-16 shooting and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds.

"I try to rebound every night but sometimes it works better and sometimes it doesn't," Nowitzki said. "I had a couple of wide-open looks but it wasn't my day, I guess."

Dallas opened the fourth quarter with its largest lead, 86-64. Los Angeles went to a press and staged a furious rally, getting within six when rookie Darius Miles made a free throw with 4:31 left. But the Mavericks scored the next seven points, including five by Finley to put away the game.

"We kind of let our guard down against their trap," Nelson said. "We should have done a better job of handling that. We just basically turned the ball over too much and settled for outside shots."

Nash had 17 points in the first half for the Mavericks, who shot 51 percent (39-of-76). Dallas made 21-of-25 free throws, with Nowitzki going 8-of-8.

Odom had 21 points but was held scoreless in the fourth. Miles recorded season highs in points and rebounds at 18 and 10, respectively. Corey Maggette scored 17 points off the bench while Eric Piatkowski added 11.

Jeff McInnis suffered through 1-of-11 shooting and finished with just two points for Los Angeles, which shot 43 percent (37-of-87).

"We don't get overly excited about the games we win and we are not going to get overly depressed about the games we lose," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We are on a different agenda than most of the other teams in this league and we have got to understand what we are trying to get done."

The Mavericks defeated the Clippers for the second time this season, also winning, 90-76, on November 13.
