Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Pat Garrity hit a 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining as the Orlando Magic held on for a 95-90 victory over the Boston Celtics for their fifth win in seven games.

The Celtics erased a nine-point deficit in the final period to tie it, 90-90, on Kenny Anderson's 17-footer with 1:10 left. But Garrity answered on Orlando's following posession, helping the Magic (14-16) draw closer to .500.

"It felt really good to hit a big shot like that," Garrity said. "Coach (Doc Rivers) set up the play during the time out to have three of our guys on the weak side to open up the corner for me and Troy (Hudson) just made a great pass."

After Tracy McGrady blocked Bryant Stith's 3-pointer with 34 seconds left, Orlando's Michael Doleac hit a pair from the line with 19 seconds left to clinch the victory.

"Tracy has a habit of doing stuff like that in clutch situations," Rivers said. "That was a big play. I thought we did a tremendous job defensively on their guys tonight. They missed a lot of shots."

John Amaechi scored 23 points and McGrady added 19 for Orlando, which shot 49 percent (40-of-82) from the field. Doleac contributed 12 points while Andrew DeClerq grabbed 10 rebounds.

Orlando played the second half without Darrell Armstrong, who was ejected with 3:55 left in the second quarter after picking up his second technical foul.

Boston was not able to build on its miracle win over the New Jersey Nets, shooting just 41 percent (32-of-78). Antoine Walker scored 26 points and Paul Pierce added 15 for the Celtics.

On Thursday, Boston shocked the Nets, 112-111, as Milt Palacio hit a wild 3-pointer at the buzzer following an errant in-bounds pass by New Jersey's Lucious Harris. But there were no such dramatics against the Magic.

Boston was pounded on the boards by a 51-36 margin, including a 13-6 edge on the offensive glass.

"We got back into the game because we pressed," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "We are losing right now because we are not blocking out and we are not hitting the glass the way we should be."

Chris Carr added 14 points off the bench for the Celtics, who have dropped seven of their last 10.

Boston's Tony Battie injured his left ankle with 8:55 left in the third quarter after going up for alley-oop and did not return.

Amechi scored 11 points in the first quarter, when the Magic opened a 27-18 lead. The Celtics closed to 50-44 at the half before Orlando surged again to take a 74-65 edge into the final period.

Doleac hit a 17-foot jumper to give Orlando an 84-75 lead with 6:42 left before the Celtics' rally fell short.
