Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Anthony Mason scored eight of his 20 points in overtime to push the Miami Heat to a 110-102 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Neither team scored in the first 86 seconds of the extra period, but the Heat made four free throws down the stretch to seal their season-high fifth straight win.

"In overtime, you've got to make shots and score points," Mason said. "The team that scores first takes the momentum."

Miami scored the first seven points in overtime to push the lead to 102-95 with 2:24 left. Detroit missed three shots and committed two turnovers before scoring its first basket to pull within 102-97.

The Pistons did not get their next basket the final 31 seconds, cutting the margin to 109-102. But Tim Hardaway split foul shots with 27.4 seconds to go to put the Heat up by eight.

"They (Miami) gave great effort throughout the game," Pistons coach George Irvine said. "I felt we did, too. But again, turnovers hurt us. We didn't get very many stops in the overtime."

Chucky Atkins missed a 12-footer with 20.9 seconds to play and Miami got the rebound and ran out the clock.

Eddie Jones scored 21 points and his three-point play with 34 seconds left in regulation tied it at 95-95.

"We didn't want to lose going into the new year," Jones said. "We wanted to win the game and not let it slip away. We wanted to put this team away, but it just didn't happen."

Atkins drilled a 3-pointer with 1:09 to go in the fourth quarter to lift the Pistons into a 92-92 tie. Jones missed a 3-pointer that would have put Miami ahead in the final minute.

Jerry Stackhouse drove the lane and converted a three-point play with 45.5 seconds remaining, but Jones answered with the tying three-point play.

"After we almost had our hearts ripped out by Stackhouse's three-point play, we came right back with a three-pointer of our own to tie it," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We played well in OT and made the plays we had to make."

"It's frustrating to lose," said Stackhouse. "They made plays at the end of the game and we had a great opportunity at the end of regulation and we just didn't do what we had to do. We didn't make smart plays. We just didn't make them beat us. We gave them that extra opportunity. We can't foul them at the end of the game and give them a chance to tie it up."

Jones led Miami with 21 points and Hardaway added 18 and 11 assists. Mason chipped in 10 rebounds as all five Heat starters scored in double figures.

Stackhouse scored 35 points and was 11-for-11 from the line. Atkins added 25, but they were the only player in double figures for Detroit. Ben Wallace pulled down 21 rebounds for the Pistons, who were facing Miami for the first time since they were swept in the first round of last season's playoffs.

"I just want to win," Riley said. "And the fact that we won the game and didn't give it away was key."

Miami was outrebounded, 53-38, and outscored from the line, 25-18.
