Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Bonzi Wells scored 16 points in place of the ailing Steve Smith as the Portland Trail Blazers won their fifth straight game, an 89-67 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Wells, who received a rare start in place of Smith, scored seven points in the first quarter as Portland opened an early seven-point lead. The Trail Blazers led 48-37 at halftime.

"I thought Bonzi played well -- it's giving us a chance to rest Steve some," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said.

Smith played 22 minutes off the bench, scoring just two points.

Charlotte got within eight points when David Wesley made a 22-footer with 4:17 to go in the third quarter. But the Trail Blazers went on an 11-1 run to close the quarter as Rasheed Wallace scored four points and Wells added three.

Portland led by as many as 25 points in the fourth period and handed Charlotte its worst loss of the season.

Wallace scored 12 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds while Damon Stoudamire also scored 12 for the Blazers, who made 27-of-30 free throws.

"Rasheed did a tremendous job on the boards," Dunleavy said. "Last year, after his All-Star season, we talked and I thought the areas he could do better are rebounding, shot blocking and being more assertive as our go-to guy at the end of games. He has done all three of those things, putting up big numbers and he has gone from All-Star status to MVP status."

The Trail Blazers won despite shooting 41 percent (29-of-80). Scottie Pippen scored 10 points and Dale Davis had six rebounds. The 12 points allowed in the first and third quarters by Portland set season-lows for Blazer opponents.

"I was pleased with our defense," Dunleavy said. "When our guys play like that, when you contest shots like that, you are going to win a lot of games. That's what it is all about."

The Hornets fell to 0-3 on their six-game road trip. They were led by Wesley and Jamal Mashburn, who scored 12 points apiece.

"This was the third game of our current road trip," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "In games one and two we gave a good accounting of ourselves in Sacramento and Seattle. Tonight we were outmanned in this game. It's not surprising that we couldn't keep it up in the third game of the trip."

P. J. Brown grabbed 13 rebounds for Charlotte, which shot just 32.5 percent (26-of-80). The 67 points was two shy of its season low set December 20 against Miami.

"We just couldn't get it going," Wesley said. "We never made any runs. We took too many jump shots and didn't get to the basket. I don't know what to say other than some nights you just don't have it and tonight we didn't have it."

Brown and Derrick Coleman combined to make just 3-of-19 shots. Lee Nailon did score 10 points off the bnech in just 16 minutes.

Charlotte played its third straight without 7-foot center Elden Campbell, who is sidelined with an inflamed right bursa sac. Campbell is averaging 12 points and seven rebounds per game.

"It's tough to fight back, especially on the road when you don't have all of your players," Silas said. "I defy any team who loses its top center and backup center to play well, especially on the road."

Portland has won 10 of 13 home meetings with Charlotte and 19 of 26 overall.
