Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Jermaine O'Neal collected 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Indiana Pacers in a 91-83 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics, who had their five-game home winning streak snapped.

In the opener of a six-game road trip, the Pacers closed with a 10-1 run, holding the SuperSonics without a basket over the last 4 1/2 minutes.

After Vin Baker scored to give Seattle an 82-81 advantage with 4:37 remaining, Jalen Rose made a jumper to give Indiana the lead for good.

Neither team scored until Travis Best hit a jumper for an 85-82 lead with 2:28 to go. Rashard Lewis answered with a free throw just over a minute later but the Sonics did not score again.

Best sank two free throws with 53 seconds to play and Reggie Miller made 1-of-2 just 12 seconds later. Best added another with 24 seconds to go and Derrick McKey scored a basket at the buzzer.

Best scored 12 of his 18 points in the final quarter and Rose had 12 of his 14 after halftime for the Pacers, who had lost seven of their previous nine games. Miller finished with 16 points.

"Come the second half we wanted to get to the basket and take advantage of the bonus," Best said.

"I felt if I could do anything to contribute on the offensive end, that would be a positive." Rose said. "You've got to stay in there and stay aggressive. My teammates were confident in allowing me to get shots in the open. Fortunately a couple went down when we needed them."

Baker and Lewis scored 14 points apiece for Seattle, which had not lost at home since a 111-104 setback to Houston on December 9.

All-Star guard Gary Payton, who had scored in double figures in 70 straight games, had just six on 3-of-9 shooting to go with 10 assists. He picked up two fouls in the opening quarter and one in the second before sitting out the rest of the half. He scored just two points in the second half.

"He has a groin injury and he tried to go." Seattle coach Nate McMillan said of Payton. "He wanted to go and really just could not get into it. That's a tough situation where he has to make a decision about how healthy he is. If he's gonna be out there, then he has to play. If he's not, then he has to support the guys that are out there playing. If we have injuries, they have to let me know. We can't play hero and try to play through injuries. We have guys over there that can play and they have to let me know."

Pacer coach Isiah Thomas used his ninth different starting lineup this season, starting former Sonics McKey and Perkins.

"Sam (Perkins) and Derrick (McKey) were huge just in terms of setting the game up." Thomas said. "It was an intelligent game that (they) played. By positioning themselves away from the ball, they were able to put Jermaine (O'Neal) in position to score with the ball. You have to constantly teach the younger guys how to play without the basketball and how to have satisfaction when another guy succeeds."

Rose was just 1-of-9 in the first half. After he knocked down his only bucket 4:21 before intermission, the Sonics went on a 12-3 run to close the half. Shammond Williams scored seven points during the surge that gave Seattle a 50-44 lead.
