Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- If Bonzi Wells keeps this up, he will be ineligible for the Sixth Man Award.

Wells scored a season-high 27 points in his third straight start, leading the Portland Trail Blazers to their season-high sixth consecutive victory, a 102-86 triumph over the Indiana Pacers.

A third-year guard, Wells is considered one of the better bench players in the NBA, spelling veteran Steve Smith with his array of offensive skills. Smith has been ailing of late and although he has not sat out, Trail Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy has opted to start Wells in the last three contests.

"At this point we are working our lineup. There is no master plan," Dunleavy said. "We are trying to get Smitty to where he is comfortable getting his legs back. He has been feeling run down, even before he had the flu."

"Coach Dunleavy told me if I play defense, I should get more minutes, and that's what I'm all about," Wells said.

Wells scored 20 points against Vancouver on Friday and 16 vs. Charlotte on Monday before his best effort of the season. He made 12-of-16 shots -- mostly layups -- and was unstoppable in the middle two periods, when Portland took control.

"I call those toughness points," Wells said. "You get a lot of those around the basket and (from) being aggressive. Some guys will back down a little bit, so I just use my body and put myself in a position to get some easy crips (baskets)."

"I mentioned to Wells that he should cool off and he said, `They're all layups' and he wasn't lying," Pacers forward Al Harrington said. "He got a lot of stuff in transition. He was sneaking out a lot."

The Indiana native lit up his home state team for the second time in as many meetings. On March 9, 2000, Wells scored a career-high 29 points in an overtime loss at Conseco Fieldhouse.

"That's where I grew up," Wells said. "That's the team I grew up watching and admiring. Whenever I get a chance to play against them, I just try to go after them."

Scottie Pippen added a season-high 24 points and nine assists for the Trail Blazers, who have won seven straight home games.

Jalen Rose scored 16 points and Reggie Miller added 13 for the Pacers, who fell to 1-1 on their season-high six-game road trip.

Indiana forward Jermaine O'Neal returned to Portland for the first time since his offseason trade. He managed just seven points and five rebounds in 35 minutes as he was matched up with All-Star Rasheed Wallace.

Portland took the lead for good at 37-36 on a fast-break reverse layup by Wells with 3:20 left in the second quarter. He had 14 points in the first half, which ended with the Blazers holding a 45-40 lead.

O'Neal's dunk had Indiana within 57-54 with 5:04 remaining in the third quarter before Portland rattled off 14 consecutive points. Wells had six on a pair of layups and an alley-oop dunk that made it 71-54 with 1:31 left.

"When you play `D' you can get out and run, so I keep moving and cutting and moving to keep it tough on the defenders," Wells said.

"Bonzi Wells played great," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "He is good off the block. He's good shooting the ball and he's good getting offensive rebounds."

The Blazers led by as many as 21 points in the final period.

Wallace had 11 points and nine rebounds and Arvydas Sabonis had 10 and seven for the Blazers, who shot 49 percent (39-of-79) and held a 42-36 rebounding edge. Smith scored eight points in 27 minutes.

Austin Croshere scored 12 points for the Pacers, who shot 42 percent (33-of-79), including 3-of-16 from 3-point range.
